University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is searching for a highly experienced and dynamic individual to assume the challenging role of Associate Director for Safeguarding. The ideal candidate must have a proven track record at a senior level, demonstrating strategic vision and leadership in the specialised field of safeguarding and LeDeR. This is a unique opportunity for a passionate and results-driven individual to spearhead significant improvements in care quality across UHSussex. Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Nurse for Quality, the selected individual will take strategic ownership and be accountable for leading the safeguarding and LeDeR functions.

This role is pivotal in ensuring the seamless integration of governance and learning systems. The successful candidate will support the Chief Nursing Officer in discharging statutory obligations regarding safeguarding adults and children, including Looked-After Children, and act as their delegated partner in safeguarding matters as required.

Main duties of the job The Associate Director of Nursing for Safeguarding will take a strategic and professional lead on all aspects of safeguarding children, Looked After Children (LAC), safeguarding adults, dementia, learning disability, enhanced care for mental health, Mental Capacity Act processes, and the legal framework regarding deprivation of liberty safeguards.

Provide strategic clinical leadership on safeguarding children and adults at risk of abuse and neglect to ensure that all health service contributions are coordinated and integrated across UHSussex in collaboration with the Sussex Safeguarding Children and Safeguarding Adult Partnership Boards. Operationally lead and manage the senior safeguarding professionals and safeguarding functions at UHSussex, providing strategic direction for the safeguarding agenda across the UHSussex. Support the Chief Nursing Officer in engaging with executive/board members, senior managers, clinicians, practitioners, and officers across health, social care, and police services to develop a strategic safeguarding vision transformed into a delivery model that the health community and Sussex Partnership Boards can adopt. Provide the Deputy Chief Nurse with practical advice and support on all matters relating to safeguarding. Provide strategic leadership for safeguarding partnerships, ensuring the work adheres to statutory duties relating to providing health services. Work closely with the designated professionals and senior leaders across organisations and agencies to inform and influence safeguarding performance and monitoring and ensure equity of access to health services to address the identified health needs of protecting children, adults at risk of abuse and neglect and other vulnerable groups. Responsible for ensuring there are robust systems, policies, procedures, professional guidance, and training programmes in place across UHSussex to enable staff to identify and safeguard children and adults at risk of abuse and neglect at an early stage, protect them from harm where possible and provide adequate care for adults and children and their families where abuse has occurred. Ensure robust safeguarding data management and reporting. Establish assurance systems and processes and facilitate effective reporting to ICS/ICB governance and assurance mechanisms. Provide expert advice, specialist supervision, coaching or support for senior staff and managers involved in complex situations, assessment and management of risk, case conferences, police or legal interviews and court appearances. Be a member of Local Safeguarding Boards/Partnerships in place, offering strategic oversight of the health agenda for this arrangement. Develop collaborative and effective relationships with vital statutory partners, specifically directors of adult and children's services in local authorities and police leads. Provide advice and direction to UHSussex executive and corporate functions to facilitate compliance with statutory responsibilities regarding evolving national and local safeguarding priorities.

Person Specification Essential

Registered Nurse / Midwife Educated to Masters level/equivalent level qualification in relevant subject, or significant experience of working at a similar level in specialist area. Senior leadership experience in a range of settings at Band (8c) or above/equivalent. Executive safeguarding experience with extensive knowledge of specialist areas. Level 5 competence for Safeguarding Significant experience of coordinating projects in complex and challenging environments. Significant senior level experience of working within a child health/safeguarding and/or looked after children/UASC/care leaver arena. Comprehensive knowledge of Safeguarding Legislation, Government policy and plans relating to safeguarding children as well as safeguarding and quality. Highly developed, specialist knowledge of the looked after children's agenda and practice. Significant Senior experience of multiagency safeguarding working as a service or system lead.
