We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University to appoint an Associate Professor in Environmental Sustainability (Research and Education) to help strengthen our existing research, teaching and impact that addresses the major environmental challenges such as Climate Change, Energy Transition and Sustainable use of Resources. We believe that education and research are a vital part of our response in this time of unprecedented change on Earth. We seek an outstanding individual to take a leadership role in research and teaching in this area as part of Durham Earth Sciences. You will have the opportunity to make a key contribution to the department's success by leading curricula development and delivery of parts of our new MSc in Environmental Sustainability, which is at final approval stage and is scheduled to begin teaching in October 2026. You will have an established, internationally recognised, and active research programme in environmental geosciences, earth system science, sustainability, or related fields, combining field, lab, and computational approaches on topics that could include, but are not limited to, global carbon cycle dynamics, carbon sequestration, environmental sustainability, climate change, energy transition or sustainable resource management. You will be expected and supported to conduct cutting-edge research at the highest level, build your own externally funded research group, collaborate widely within and outside the department, and explore the full potential of the impact of your research. Your work will contribute to research and impact themes in the Department, the Science Faculty and across the University, including cross-disciplinary and collaborative vehicles such as the Durham Energy Institute and the Institute for Hazard, Risk and Resilience. Durham is a UK top 5 Earth Sciences department and is committed to helping you to develop your full potential in both education and research. Start-up packages can be negotiated and there are many examples of flexible working practices. The Department strives for a collegial, collaborative and flexible working environment and is a member of the Athena SWAN Charter, currently holding a departmental Silver Athena SWAN award. Interviews will take place in mid/late March 2025 and successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1 October 2025, a full 12 months before launch of the new MSc course.
