The purpose of the associate Spinal Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role is to develop and drive forward quality focused care for Children and Young People (CYP) across inpatient and outpatient spinal surgery services. They will support CYP and their families through their spinal surgery care pathway and through to transition to adult services, using evidence-based clinical practice in line with current research, guidelines, and other available evidence.

The post holder will work collaboratively with Children's Hospital clinicians and other members of the Multidisciplinary team to ensure delivery of reliable high-quality care while ensuring children, young people, and their families are fully informed and supported in their journey through the service. They will instigate, plan, and oversee safe and efficient delivery of a pathway of care for patients, including those with learning disabilities. The post holder will be expected to exercise a degree of professional autonomy and provide the highest standard of holistic patient care.

Main duties of the job

Ensure that CYP always receive high-quality harm-free care and contribute to the monitoring of this through audit or other KPIs / outcome measures. Coordinate aspects of the CYP care in agreement and negotiation with them and their families. Communicate and liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, both verbally and in writing across the trust and other organisations. Provide and receive highly complex or sensitive information where there are barriers to understanding. Promote and maintain excellent effective communication with patients, relatives, and visitors. Work closely with the spinal consultants and their teams to support the patient journey. Develop expert knowledge within the field of paediatric spinal surgery and support junior nursing and administrative staff in your service and trust. Take personal responsibility to ensure your own personal and professional development, which may include any relevant competency frameworks. Develop knowledge and participate in clinical audits in paediatric spinal surgery to improve care standards. Develop supported independent practice seeing both inpatients and outpatients seeking support when appropriate, which may warrant undertaking clinical shifts to develop own practice and understanding of current issues. Take a key role within the MDT in coordination of the patient pathway. Provide information and advice to healthcare professionals about your service.

Job responsibilities

Professional Acts as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership for relevant clinical areas and demonstration of competent and accountable clinical practice. Demonstrates knowledge of contemporary clinical practice, explores new ideas, and introduces positive, evidence-based change in line with local and national/international initiatives and shares with your team. Establish and maintain professional networking relationships with all professionals and groups/Trusts. Be accountable for one’s own professional practice and professional development and ensure registration and compliance with the NMC and the Code of professional Conduct or other relevant regulatory body for your discipline and support junior members of staff to do the same. Support development and implement educational programmes for staff with regard to your specialty, education for patients, carers, and colleagues and evaluate effectiveness of this delivery with your team. Collect and analyse incidents and prevalence data for your specialty within the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS trust, identifying trends and translating these to reports/action plans. Work within the financial budget allocated to your specialty, in collaboration with the line manager, general manager, and appropriate leads across CYP and Adult services.

Education, Training and Development Contribute to the clinical learning environment, acting as a teacher, facilitator, role model, mentor, or preceptor according to the planned learning needs of individuals. Work in close collaboration with other clinicians to set and maintain local standards with regards to your specialty. Provide learning opportunities for nursing staff and contribute to the learning opportunities of other professional groups. Support the provision and organisation of in-service training for clinical staff. Participate in study days/seminars organised within and outside of the Trust. Maintain own knowledge and skills and develop own clinical evidence-based practice. Teach and support students within the University and clinical environment. Develop and act as an educational resource for clinical staff, patients, and carers, and relevant external agencies by providing formal and informal education. Contribute towards development, evaluations, and management of educational training programmes for all staff and patients and their carers in liaison with Clinical Educators/Facilitators or other colleagues. Maintain a current awareness of local, regional, national, and International perspectives using and sharing this knowledge to influence service development. Monitor risks in own and wider practices, challenging others and identifying issues with your service maintaining the risk register with your line manager.

Audit and Research

The post holder will contribute to a research & development culture by: Utilising evidence-based research to develop practice. Identifying priorities for research and development within the specialty. Assisting staff in translating research findings into policy and practice. Developing & undertaking audit to evaluate own work including the service and its outcomes in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary team. Supporting in auditing the services provided and producing service reports to demonstrate efficacy as directed by the line manager. Contributing to local, regional, or national audit/research and presenting findings as appropriate. Identifying need for changes in practice, making recommendations for service improvement, and facilitating new ways of working, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. Participating in and supporting the research nurse and the research projects undertaken in the clinical area. This will involve actively recruiting suitable patients to the relevant body.

Person Specification

Communication & Relationship Skills

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential Registered Nurse Child Degree or Diploma Level Education as Registered Nurse (RN Child or RSCN). Teaching and Mentoring experience/qualification. Has worked as a member of Multi-professional team within an orthopaedic setting. Substantial clinical nursing experience of working with children and young people who have undergone spinal surgery. Experience in delivering/overseeing care for the child or young person with various learning and disability needs. Minimum of 3 years' experience in a post-registration children's nursing substantive post with experience in an orthopaedic setting. Specialist Knowledge and skills. Knowledge of current research and professional nursing issues related to the specialty. Able to demonstrate ongoing professional development. Setting & auditing clinical standards. Utilisation of research in practice. Able to work independently and within a team. Ability to deliver formal and informal education programmes. Level 3 safeguarding.

Desirable Spinal and orthopaedic university module or willingness to undertake module in the future. Experience in developing and implementing policies & procedures. Understanding of CQC transition requirements for specialist children's trusts.

Analytical & Judgment Skills

Essential Demonstrates sound clinical reasoning, applying theory to practice. Understands legal responsibilities of profession.
