Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites. In collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated and opened on the hospital site. We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year. This post is suitable for an experienced audiologist and entails working as part of a multidisciplinary team providing highly specialised audiological services, including advanced and complex assessment and rehabilitation of hearing impaired children. The post holder will work at Alder Hey and community clinics and schools across the Liverpool, Sefton and West Lancashire region; therefore, the ability to travel in-between sites is essential. The post-holder will be expected to assist with the mentoring of junior members of staff and students and ensure that a consistently high quality, complex and sophisticated clinical service is provided. This includes maintaining continuous professional development, working autonomously, managing own caseload, demonstrating own initiative and supporting senior staff and managers in developing the service. Clinical/Scientific and Technical Carry out otoscopy following BSA recommended procedures. Diagnose, manage and rehabilitate children with hearing impairment using a wide range of advanced and complex audiological procedures. Perform diagnostic assessment of the hearing of children and analyse the results. Provide an efficient Tier 2 service in the community. Work independently in the assessment, diagnosis and management of children aged 4 years onwards as part of the Tier 2 Service. Assess, diagnose and manage children in Tier 3 clinics, which includes a variety of test techniques, including infant distraction testing, visual re-enforcement audiometry (VRA), performance testing, speech testing, testing of middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) using tympanometry, TEOAEs, DPAOE and growth studies. Work as an independent practitioner when carrying out hearing tests in deaf resource bases in school settings. Test hearing aids in schools using test box equipment, to carry out general repairs, re-tubing of ear moulds, to take aural impressions and carry out assessments on hearing aid users. Communication Ability to explain to children what they are required to do when performing hearing tests, using appropriate language. Able to use tact and persuasion where barriers to understanding exist, e.g. very young children and children with learning difficulties, or with an uncooperative child. Communicate effectively with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, carers and children of all ages. Able to communicate complex technical information in a meaningful manner, adapting instructions and tests to children of different ages and special needs. Demonstrate reassurance and persuasive skills to gain a child’s confidence for invasive procedures e.g. impressions. Demonstrate sensitivity and awareness when ‘Sharing the News’ with children, parents and families e.g. sudden hearing loss or deterioration of existing hearing loss. Person specification

Post registration experience in an Audiology Department Demonstrate understanding of the range of paediatric assessments. Experience in a wide range of diagnostic tests and rehabilitation tools. Experience of fitting, verifying and evaluating a range of hearing aids and completing individual management plans. Substantial post registration experience in an Audiology Department Experience of fitting bone conduction hearing devices Experience of vestibular testing Experience of training and development of junior members of staff BSc and MSc university students on clinical placement Knowledge of British Sign Language Skills and attributes
Evidence of continuous personal development via post Graduate Courses relevant to the clinical speciality.
