Job summary

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital is a 32 bedded unit, with 12 Critical Care cots and 20 Special Care cots. The NICU serves a diverse local population, providing intensive and high dependency care for all ten thousand babies born within the Trust. The post holder will work closely with members of the MDT team and the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network. We are looking for a speech and language therapist with clinical experience in paediatric speech and language therapy who can manage a caseload of patients within the neonatal service. Main duties, tasks & skills required

To deliver an advanced Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service including assessment and management of neonates within the neonatal service. This includes developing patient pathways, integrating with developmental follow-up screening clinics, and providing advice to the neonatal nursing outreach team. To manage, supervise and appraise staff and students within the specialist neonatal service. To lead in service development, education, training, and development of SLT clinical practice in the neonatal setting. To undertake clinical audits and evaluation of evidence-based practice. Qualifications

Essential

Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent Health and Care Professions Council - License to Practice Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Evidence of relevant postgraduate training in neonates Desirable

Postgraduate advanced accredited Paediatric dysphagia training Attendance at recent postgraduate specialist courses relevant to the clinical field(s) Experience

Essential

Specialist level of clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment and management of complex Paediatric feeding, swallowing and communication disorders. At least three years post-registration experience in dysphagia, including infants under 1 year. Relevant postgraduate experience in the assessment and management of neonates. Experience of SLT students at student clinical tutor and supervisor levels. Experience of leading audit. Experience of training staff groups at all levels. Ability to work as part of multidisciplinary team. Clinical supervision, teaching, mentorship, and appraisal skills. Desirable

Experience of conducting or being involved in research in the specialist area. Relevant postgraduate experience in the acute setting. Additional Criteria
