At Anaphite, we believe creative chemistry will accelerate the energy transition. Our mission is to decarbonise and improve battery production by helping the industry to shift to dry electrode coating. We work with the battery industry to optimise dry electrode coating, manufacturing better and more sustainable batteries at lower cost. Anaphite was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in central Bristol in the Southwest of the UK.
Summary:
Anaphite is going through a period of rapid growth and is looking for ambitious individuals to join the Cell and Electrodes Team to explore the application of novel dry coating formulations and electrode designs, grow our capabilities, and help steer the development of Anaphite’s core technology.
This exciting opportunity as a Battery Scientist would see the successful candidate working alongside experienced Chemists, Battery Scientists, and Process Engineers, getting involved in the development and assessment of high-quality materials and electrodes for the production of Li-ion batteries. This will consist of building an extensive knowledge surrounding the technologies, materials, and chemistries involved, exploring and defining new ways to apply material science and electrochemistry to the design, characterisation, and quality control for electrode precursor powders, composites, and electrode films.
We are looking for a practical, organised, and driven individual with good experience in battery science fundamentals to help generate new insights and approaches to advancing and applying our technology towards evolving commercial opportunities.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Contributing towards product & scientific development through characterisation of a range of battery relevant materials, including foils, metal oxide actives, carbons, and binders, and relate material characteristics to performance in composites and their relevant formation processes;
Characterise the properties of electrode materials including powder and film conductivity, contact resistance, tortuosity, adhesion/cohesion, moisture content, DSC, TGA, SEM, and EDX;
Use a combination of electrochemical techniques, including chronoamperometry, galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltametric, and EIS to characterise performance and failure modes of electrodes, providing feedback and potential design improvements;
Maintain understanding of cutting-edge advancements in battery materials and ensure benchmarks and testing reflect evolving industry standards;
Follow test methods to a high standard of reproducibility and use insights to relate properties and process of materials to structure and performance;
Develop and improve existing characterisation to enhance efficiency through a combination of increased accuracy and throughput;
Support development and characterisation of external projects of materials towards customer standards and specifications where necessary;
Modify and update standard operating procedures for measurement and analysis techniques where necessary to reflect continuous improvement of methods and capability;
Complete relevant processes and documentation to ensure Health and Safety standards are adhered to.
Minimum Requirements:
Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or other relevant field;
Experience of electrochemical characterisation of materials and composites for battery applications;
Experience of a variety of cell formats including half-cells, full cells, and 3-electrode cells across coin-cell/Swagelok and single layer pouch cell formats;
Proficiency in data handling and analysis software packages such as Excel, Origin, or Matlab;
Experience of material characterisation techniques relevant to battery material R&D;
Understanding of fundamental electrochemical characterisation of battery materials;
Proficiency in communication of results and work using visual, written, and spoken methods;
Able to work both independently and with a team;
Highly organised and excellent attention to detail;
Training in battery-related materials;
2 or more years of industrially relevant experience in battery R&D.
Salary/Benefits:
Base Salary: £34,650 - £43,050 annually depending on experience;
Learning and development for career progression - opportunities to attend conferences, mentorship and chartership opportunities, paid study leave, participate in outreach activities and give back to the community;
Compelling sign-on share options bonus with the potential for significant future value - we want you to be rewarded for Anaphite's success;
Vitality health insurance package including dental, optical, mental, and general health;
Discounts and rewards through our Vitality app such as gym memberships, headspace app, and much more!
Work/life balance (enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption leave, paid bereavement leave, enhanced sick pay, etc.);
Flexible working outside of core hours 10am-4pm;
£500 towards relocation expenses, if applicable;
Free on-site parking;
Referral scheme if you recommend colleagues to the organisation;
25 days holiday plus 8 statutory bank holidays (increasing up to 30 days with continuous service);
Electric car scheme (Salary Sacrifice);
