We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Biomedical Science Assistant (Higher Level) to support the Scientific and Consultant teams in the department of Histopathology at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. The Histopathology service is provided by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and processes Histopathology Specimens from Chesterfield and North Derbyshire on our Chesterfield site. This equates to approximately 18,500 Histopathology requests per year. The post will be based at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital. The Chesterfield Histopathology department deals with multiple tissue specimens (biopsy, surgical resection, and cytology) and includes expertise in Dermatopathology, Breast, Gynaecology, Endocrine, Genito-urinary, and Gastro-intestinal pathology. Laboratory working hours are currently 08:30 - 17:00 Mon - Fri. Main duties of the job The successful candidate will be required to undertake roles in specimen reception, specimen dissection transcription, specimen processing, as well as a range of other duties including computer data entry, operation of laboratory equipment, slide scanning to produce whole slide images, and the filing and retrieval of specimens, glass slides, and paraffin blocks. Key aspects of the position cover: Pre-analytical processing of samples including receipt, preparation, and processing. Dealing with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff, and other Service Users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary. Assisting Scientific Staff in laboratory activities. Storage and retrieval of biological materials. Person Specification Education and Qualifications Essential

GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above. Level 3 qualification e.g. NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) plus significant laboratory experience or extensive laboratory experience in the relevant discipline. Skills and Knowledge Essential Keyboard and basic IT skills. Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues. Effective Communication skills, written and oral. Personal Qualities Essential Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work. Experience Essential Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy. Desirable Experience with a range of laboratory techniques. Previous NHS laboratory experience.
