A post is available in the Histopathology Department. This post presents an exciting opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy modern teaching hospital laboratory. The department has a workload of around 70,000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a committed team of office, laboratory and Consultant Pathologist staff. The department encourages active professional development and further educational activities.

The service is expanding Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection and Biomedical Scientist reporting roles. The service is also using digital pathology reporting. We also use CEREBRO specimen tracking system and will be replacing most of our specialist laboratory equipment this year.

We will also welcome applications from graduates who have completed an IBMS accredited biomedical sciences degree or candidates currently in a trainee BMS role. You would then complete the IBMS registration portfolio and complete HCPC registration before moving to a registered BMS role.

Main duties of the job

Work as a BMS in all sections of the laboratory. Carry out section cutting, embedding, special staining, Immunohistochemistry and specimen reception/dissection room work. Carry our frozen sections and Mohs frozen sections. Help with staff training, quality control and new projects. Help with lab projects/development. Carry out audits.

Job responsibilities

Communicates routine clinical technical service related information to colleagues, managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues and patient carers. Participates in departmental meetings and contributes to effective communication within the department. Input patient/sample data in laboratory computer systems on daily basis, to include other colleagues work. Creates, amends, processes, generates, updates, clarifies and stores information on patient databases for users to access, both within and outside the Trust. Assist experienced staff in the evaluation and development of new and existing techniques to improve the service and patient care. Educate and train Trainee BMS and support workers as required within their specialised area. Actively promote safe working practices in all areas of the laboratory.

BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent Hold registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Be a member of the IBMS
