A vacancy has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team in the Clinical Chemistry department at Rotherham Hospital, which forms part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with a flexible approach to work.

Participation in the out of hours service is an essential requirement, once deemed competent in all relevant areas. The OOH service is provided over 24/7, 365 days.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must possess an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, ideally with relevant experience in Clinical Chemistry, and hold current registration with the HCPC (Band 5/Band 6 BMS). If applying for a Band 6 role, candidates will have completed the IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or be ready for assessment.

Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards. Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards. Maintain complex pieces of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results are produced for patients. Participate in out of hours rotas covering the 24/7 routine Biochemistry service. Be accountable for own professional actions and work for long periods of time without direct supervision. Assist in monitoring quality standards and perform audits as directed in line with service needs. Monitor stock levels and assist senior members of staff with ordering and organising stock as required. Participate in regular CPD activities to maintain up-to-date knowledge and experience.

Please note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants' experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 5 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 6.

Essential

IBMS accredited BSC in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist Completion of IBMS post-graduate registration portfolio or equivalent Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory Training and required Laboratory competencies Commitment to complete the relevant Specialist BMS IBMS portfolio IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant specialist subject (Band 6)

Desirable

Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses regarding H&S, leadership, quality or training

Experience

Essential

Experience with a range of laboratory techniques Detailed understanding of job content Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices Discipline-specific NHS experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory (Microbiology/Virology/Histopathology/Blood sciences) (Band 6) Multi-disciplinary awareness (Band 6) Experience with a wide range of laboratory techniques in use across Blood sciences (Band 6) Experience working within a laboratory providing local, regional or national tertiary reference facilities (Band 6) Experience in the implementation of new methodologies and/or equipment (Band 6) Experience with the UKAS accreditation process (Band 6)
