Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for supervising staff during the day-to-day operation of the department and performing analytical work. The post holder will lead the development of the quality system ensuring the laboratory complies with ISO15189 accreditation standard and MHRA requirements.

The key working relationships will be with staff in Haematology, but the post holder will be expected to liaise with staff throughout Pathology and the Trust. There will be frequent occasions when the post holder takes sole responsibility for work, for example when no Lead is present.

Job responsibilities

To be able to carry complex troubleshooting, contact suppliers, and organise repairs autonomously. To be able to rectify problems and liaise with personnel effectively. To manage staff rotas on Health Rosters and ensure they are accurate and up to date, documenting OC swaps and amending the weekly rota as required. To ensure all sections are covered and appropriately staffed during unplanned absences and to liaise with the other haematology seniors when changes are made. To participate in senior meetings, promote quality together with the Quality Team and BT Lead, and to investigate incidents and non-compliances in a timely manner. To support management and the BT lead in performance-related matters, ensuring all technical aspects are performed to the expected standards. To ensure SOPs are being updated and followed up, communicating changes regularly and implementing them in the lab.

Qualifications

Essential HCPC Registration Evidence of ongoing professional development MSc or higher specialist diploma level experience

Desirable Evidence of post-registration study Evidence of training related to specific area or instrument(s) BBTS exam

Experience

Essential Experience of working in all areas of relevant diagnostic laboratory Able to work to deadlines Able to write/review SOPs and documents Able to technically validate laboratory results Full understanding of EQA & IQC and their implications Full understanding of laboratory H& S procedures General understanding of all aspects of quality management Knowledge and understanding of ISO15189 standard Able to perform basic training

Desirable Ability to take corrective and preventative actions for IQC non-conformities Ability to perform and analyse simple audits Ability to manage laboratory section and staff on a daily basis Experience of handling day-to-day staffing and technical issues within specialism
