An exciting opportunity to be part of an established, highly functioning, specialist OG cancer nursing team. The aim of this post is to provide comprehensive, highly specialised assessment, care, advice and support to patients with suspected or confirmed UGI cancer and their cares/family. Act as a key worker and liaise with other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible specialist care for patients. This will be for local patient group but also those referred from peripheral Trusts for treatment (we are a specialist centre for the treatment of OG cancers and a cancer treatment centre) This will be set upon a high standard of knowledge and skills, both academically and through experience. Main duties of the job

To be part of the delivery of cancer diagnosis/ treatment/ living with and beyond cancer/ survivorship and support to cancer patients and their families. Ensuring compliance with all national cancer standards (COSD). Providing nurse led telephone clinics at all points of the cancer pathway, provide cover for the primary cancer diagnosis clinic in the absence of the band 8a/ lead. Provide HNA for all cancer patients and be an active member of the OG cancer support group. Act as a senior expert nurse to promote the service/ an educator and mentor of more junior staff both within the team and to the wider Trust staff, ultimately delivering high quality care and best practice. Ensure excellent communication channels with the OG CNS Lead/ manager. To maintain team cohesion/ excellence in service and service improvement. The post holder will be a source of support to more junior OG nursing team colleagues and in the absence of the manager be able to provide peer support and professional supervision. The post holder will provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, and be faced with barriers to understanding; they will have expert skills to enable patients and carers overcome these barriers. The post holder, in collaboration with OG CNS Lead/ OG team will continue to develop relevant and contemporaneous documentation/information for patients and staff; and be able to autonomously drive these. To participate in the delivery of the established OG telephone support service/ clinic to patients. To be available for patients, their carers and relatives in order to assess and manage day to day problems/ anxieties and to refer on where appropriate. To ensure that OG cancer information is available and provide specific advice and support to patients with cancer, which will often include communicating sensitive information about diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis and outcomes of illness including future care, terminal illness and bereavement. Providing patients and relatives with empathy and reassurance. Ensure this information is up to date and accurate. To ensure service user views are sought by contributing to patient involvement in the development of services. To be actively involved and key in driving the UGI support group and its Steering group and that this is translated into service improvement. Represent the speciality attending appropriate meetings both internally and externally relating to the service. Keep up to date with professional issues, the National cancer agenda and ensure that they are reflected in practice/ service improvement within the team. Participate in opportunities to share good practice and innovations with specialist colleagues both locally and nationally. The post holder will cascade relevant training to ward nurses and work with the Ward Managers to continue developing a relationships and best practice. The post holder will act as a role model for other nurses by demonstrating expert knowledge / and or skills and promote opportunities for their professional development. Be an active member in the cancer quality standards yearly review (peer review) and liaise with the wider MDT to implement service improvement. Work with the CNS lead to interpret and implement feedback from the National Cancer Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire. Person Specification
