Job Summary: The Cardiology Device Registered Nurse treats patients with heart failure, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, and cardiac arrhythmias by assisting electrophysiologists with the management of all patients with implanted cardiac devices (pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). This includes performing EKGs, clinical interrogation, clinical programming, review of patient algorithms, and device testing during implant procedures. The nurse is responsible for following the status of all device patients; registering the status internally and with the manufacturer and following recall notices from the manufacturers. The Cardiology Device RN may also assist with pre-procedure workup, clinical support, telephone triage, and coordination of care services. Provides clinical support in an office setting, in collaboration with the physicians. Supports the clinical mission through patient follow-up calls, triaging incoming calls, communicating results, and following up with physicians as needed. The RN counsels and educates patients and families and monitors compliance with physician recommendations; reviews electronic and paper patient records, reports, test, and where follow up is needed, communicating to physician. Enters patient information into the electronic medical record and associated databases. Duties and Responsibilities: Performs EKGs and clinical interrogation of pacemaker and AICD devices. Programs pacemaker and AICD devices under the direct supervision of a cardiologist(s). Reviews patient algorithms; EKGS and other clinical interrogation data and prepares preliminary reports for the cardiologist(s). Responsible for establishing and maintaining a remote monitoring program. Participates in pacemaker insertion procedures; testing devices and settings under the direct supervision of the cardiologist. Maintains and analyzes pacemaker and AICD clinical records and prepares analysis for physician review. Maintains process for manufacturer recalls and follows recall requirements under direction of cardiologist. Performs remote device monitoring including scheduling, downloading clinical information, and analyzing transmissions. Ensures patient needs are being met by a well-coordinated team of physicians and allied health professionals. Ensures that requests for information and any issues from treating/referring physicians are handled in a courteous and expeditious manner. Works with physicians and patients to coordinate research studies. Perform all other related duties as assigned. Requirements: Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred. Minimum five (5) years clinical experience in a cardiology care setting. 2 years direct experience in a cardiac device program required. Current RN licensure in the State of Rhode Island. BCLS and ACLS certification required. Knowledge of cardiac and pulmonary pathophysiology and risk factors, common cardiac medications and drug interactions and have electrocardiographic interpretation skills.
