The below role descriptor seeks to capture the main requirements of the role consistently, providing a summary of the key duties of the flexible role to help in setting expectations for applicants, flexible workers and line managers. They are not intended to cover all duties which may be required. The research assistant would work with Dr Katherine Hambridge and team on a project preparatory to the submission of a large funding application on the topic of the 19th-century German voice. Central to the methodology is the application of machine learning to German 19th-century journals: the work of the research assistant is therefore to: Ascertain the existing coverage of German 19th-century journals with musical content by digitisation projects. Together with the team, assess the availability, quality and format of the data, including via correspondence with German libraries. Collaborate in the preparation of the funding application. Facility in reading and writing in German is required, as well as confident standard IT skills (training provided for specific tasks). No programming experience is required. Experience with the nineteenth-century press/music culture would be beneficial, but is not required. The role is an opportunity to get to grips with the infrastructure of digital humanities methodologies, and work with a team pioneering new data analysis techniques for the humanities. Responsibilities
Undertake research as appropriate to the field of study including conducting literature reviews, collecting and analysing data. Provide ready access to all data for the faculty researcher and/or supervisor. Prepare spreadsheets, informal reports and presentations. Manage and respond to project-related email, including in German. Attend project meetings, seminars and other meetings as necessary, remotely or in-person.
