14-Feb-2025, 11:59:00 PM Applications are invited for a position of Research Assistant in the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University. The research assistant will work on the project “Digital counterpublics, everyday geopolitics, and the emerging transnational activism of diasporic Chinese youth”, which is funded by the British Academy and led by Dr Chenchen Zhang. The project focuses on the digital Chinese diaspora’s engagement in transnational activism, especially feminist, queer, anti-colonial, and Palestine solidarity movements. The research assistant will play a key role in the project by collecting and preparing relevant social media data for analysis. The successful candidate may also be involved in analysis of data and publication of results. Candidates must reside in the UK and have the right to work in the UK. We are open to accommodating flexible working arrangements for this position, including remote working, job-sharing, or compressed working hours. Undertake research as appropriate to the field of study including conducting literature reviews, collecting and analysing data. Maintain accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary. Provide ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researcher and/or supervisor. Prepare other articles, reports, and presentations. Manage and respond to project related email. Attend project meetings, seminars and other meetings as necessary. Qualifications

We are looking for a person who has: An advanced knowledge of written Chinese; Experience in web data scraping; Experience in mixed-methods discourse analysis. The following characteristics are NOT required, but would be an advantage: A good knowledge of and interest in diaspora Chinese activism; A keen interest in feminist, queer, decolonial, and other critical theories; Experience in other qualitative research methods such as ethnography and interviews.
