An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a permanent Band 7 Children's & Young People's Epilepsy Nurse Specialist. This post is also eligible for an Annex 21 opportunity for experienced staff with an interest in epilepsy management. The post holder will be responsible for meeting the needs of children, young people and their families with epilepsy. The post holder will support the Consultant to deliver holistic care to meet the needs of this patient group. This service is provided in accordance with national, local and regional guidance, standards, protocols and policies in order to ensure children and young people reach their full potential throughout childhood and into adult life. The service is to be underpinned by the guiding principles of minimising risk, prioritising patient safety, clinical effectiveness and user satisfaction. Applicants must hold a recognised British Paediatric Neurology Association (BPNA) qualification and an Independent and Supplementary None Medical Prescribing (NMP) qualification. To ensure that the care of children and young people with epilepsy in the local boroughs is to a high standard in accordance with the International League against Epilepsy guidelines, NICE guidance, the Children's NSF, Epilepsy 12 audit findings and the clinical governance agenda includes evidence based protocol development, audit, risk management, professional development. To co-ordinate the care of children and young people with epilepsy and their families, in order to provide a seamless service within the multi-professional team, including staff from other statutory and voluntary agencies, both hospital and community based. Job responsibilities

To advise as required on in-patient clinical management following appropriate protocols and with consultant support. To arrange appropriate on-going management, individualised to meet each family's needs, at Out-Patients and through home visits and telephone support. To provide the specialist, expert link between hospital and home for young people with epilepsy, to ensure they receive an integrated service relevant to their needs and those of their family. To act as an expert resource for all personnel involved in the child's well-being including hospital staff and staff from all relevant statutory and voluntary agencies. To empower each child and family to become as independent as possible in the management of their epilepsy and to learn how to live with it with minimal impact on their family life. To ensure the psycho-social impact of epilepsy is recognised and effectively managed working in partnership with family therapists and Child Mental Health colleagues and facilitate conjunct working with families. To prescribe and provide expert advice on the preparation, adjustment and use of appropriate medication and equipment according to Trust policies and protocols both for in-patients and young people living with epilepsy in the community using nurse prescribing in accordance with Trust policy and protocols. To provide an effective transition service of care from paediatric epilepsy services to adult epilepsy services whether hospital or community based, either directly or via a young people's clinic. To act as support to develop epilepsy knowledge, training and skills. Person Specification

Qualifications

Professional Registration. RN (Child) / RSCN Degree level study in nursing related subject Post registration qualification in Epilepsy care or evidence of further study in similar. ENB 998 up to date mentorship course or equivalent V300 Independent nurse prescribing or willingness to complete Has achieved or be working towards Masters level qualification in nursing related subject. Knowledge

Experience of epilepsy management, including inpatient and outpatient care. Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge supported by specialist clinical/ managerial training. Effective communicator, able to communicate both complex and sensitive information Specialist knowledge underpinned by theory acquired through CPD Clinical experience at Band 5 or above Evidence of continuing professional development Skills

Up to date clinical skills in order to ensure quality of services being provided Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and have a flexible approach with respect to responsibilities. Excellent organisational skills Able to prioritise and use initiative Ability to work autonomously & as a team member Be effective in implementation of best practice and reviewing and monitoring of changes in practice. Ability to carry out general nursing procedures Role involves sitting, standing, walking, home visiting, driving, school visits. Involves frequent periods of concentration on patient assessment/scheduling of visits during record keeping and planning of care Will be frequently be exposed to distressing and occasional highly distressing and emotional circumstances. Work on ward, in an outpatient setting or home, school to provide direct or indirect clinical care. Required to use road transportation to meet the needs of the post.
