Job overview King’s Ophthalmology Service at the South Sites is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist with a particular interest in Cornea. This is a fixed term post for 12 months covering maternity leave.
The role involves utilizing your knowledge and skills to autonomously manage a cohort of patients as part of a multi-professional team, undertake interventional procedures independently and demonstrate the Trust Values.
The service is open 7 days a week and may involve travel and clinic sessions at other Kings Ophthalmology Sites.
Main duties of the job In collaboration with the care group and specialty team, the post holder is responsible for safe and effective care. They will assess, monitor, implement and coordinate patient management including participating with research, pathway redesign and service improvement projects.
The post holder will play a key role in developing this clinical nurse specialist role and interventions to identify emerging issues, reduce patient anxiety, improve efficiency, drive innovation and improve the quality of care through:
Providing specialist autonomous nursing care for patients attending an Ophthalmic Specialty Service.
Acting as an enhanced practitioner who can lead the specialist nursing function in the delivery of specialist care.
A role in facilitating, enabling and supporting service improvement and the development of the CNS remit which is evidence-based with best practice for patients.
Multi-disciplinary team working to implement a strategic development plan for the service with daily operational and managerial responsibilities.
Acting as a resource for staff education and development.
Reviewing and managing patient pathways to improve flow and efficiency in the clinic/wards/department to ensure the patient experience is positive.
The post holder must be an RN and is bound by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurse, Midwives and Health.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Professional/Clinical Nursing Practice
To be accountable for their own practice and utilize available opportunities to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.
Act in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.
Use knowledge and expertise to make clinical judgements using an evidence-based approach.
Request investigations to confirm diagnoses where appropriate.
Engage in case discussions and MDT meetings to improve subject knowledge and develop in role.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialized program of care to patients, relatives and carer.
Enable patient choice and involvement and initiate appropriate action.
Maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with NMC, Trust and medico-legal requirements.
Act as a patient advocate when appropriate, ensuring respect for patient confidentiality, privacy and cultural/ethnic background.
Be a credible and approachable role model for junior staff and students.
Engage in local and national forums to develop practice and raise the profile of the service and Trust.
Provide clinical advice in accordance with current evidence-based practice.
Provide clinical advice and support to healthcare professionals across organizational boundaries.
Ensure patients and their families are given appropriate oral and written information regarding planned care.

Participate in the development and implementation of assessment and mentorship/preceptorship processes for new staff.
