The Cambridge Clinical Mitochondrial Research Group (MitoCAMB) studies the genetic basis and mechanisms of mitochondrial diseases, including mitochondrial eye diseases, and other rare inherited neurological disorders, such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and spastic ataxias. Our aim is to provide a precise diagnosis and to discover new treatments. The post-holder will conduct a short-term project of clinical research focused on the natural history of rare mitochondrial disorders, whilst supporting ongoing academic-led biomarker studies, experimental medicine, and early phase clinical trials in other mitochondrial disorders within the Cambridge Clinical Mitochondrial Research Group MitoCamb, and the new National Rare Disease Centre funded by LifeArc. This is a unique opportunity to prepare and obtain preliminary data for a clinical PhD or carry out a period of postdoctoral research focused on translating scientific discoveries into novel treatments for rare mitochondrial disorders. Applicants will need to demonstrate a commitment to patient confidentiality, be prepared to acquire knowledge and skills essential for effective research governance, and act at all times to the highest professional standards. Excellent oral and written communication, good interpersonal skills, IT proficiency at advanced user level, and resourcefulness are also required. The post is available from February 2025 for 12 months. The hours of work for the position is 0.85 FTE. The successful applicant must be a registered medical practitioner permitted to practise in the UK, have completed general medical training, and hold MRCP or equivalent. We encourage applications from any medical specialty and from any career grade, although this post would be an excellent opportunity for a medical practitioner with an interest in neurology or clinical genetics. Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (enhanced with adults' barred list) and a health assessment. This appointment also requires a Research Passport application.
