Clinical Scientist

Full time
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS) for a suitably qualified Clinical Scientist to join our UKAS accredited department and contribute to the provision of the expanding Genomics service in Wessex based at the Southampton Laboratory.

WGLS is part of the Central and South Genomics Laboratory Hub (GLH) Consortium, providing a comprehensive range of molecular investigations and complex interpretation for haemato-oncology, solid tumours, pharmacogenomics and rare disease in line with the National Genomics Test Directory. We currently operate a 2 site model, following the creation of a single Wessex Genomics service managed by Southampton, combining the Salisbury and Southampton genomics teams.

Candidates working towards Clinical Scientist HCPC registration will be considered for this post. If successful they will be appointed at a lower band and will progress to a Band 7 upon successfully completion of their HCPC registration.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to.

All non-clinical roles may involve a mixture of on site and remote working. Specific details and flexible working options can be discussed as part of the interview process. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Specific to this role is the suitability for agile working which is a mixture of on-site and remote working. In addition, we are open to discussing flexibility in the hours that you work. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The post holder will be able to analyse, interpret and report complex molecular investigations. The post holder will work closely with the senior Wessex Genomics team, other departments within the Pathology directorate and the various teams across the Wessex region and as part of the GLH. The post holder will play a role in delivering the strategic plan for UHS genomics as part of the national reconfiguration of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service. The successful candidate will take part in all aspects of the genomics service including the interpretation, verification and validation of NGS data. They will also support developments including the transfer of assays to NGS platforms, complex interpretation, active engagement in MDTs and opportunities for research developments.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated HCPC registered Clinical Scientist with experience and knowledge in genomics. The successful applicant will have demonstrated their ability to constructively work through periods of change and have experience of innovation through new technologies and processes. The post requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ongoing teamwork.

The laboratory supports the training of a variety of STP programmes and is a training centre for STP trainees in Cancer Genomics.

Candidates currently working towards HCPC registration will be considered for this role. If successful they will be paid at a lower band and then progress to a band 7 upon obtaining HCPC registration.
