Main duties of the job As a Clinical Sister/ Charge Nurse you will provide clinical and professional leadership, supervision and support to patient, nursing staff and students. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning and provision of specialist nursing, advice and carries out specialist nursing procedures including providing education, surveillance and insertion of Vascular Access devices including peripheral cannulas, Mid-lines and PICC lines (peripherally inserted central catheters). The post holder may undertake research, lead clinical audits in own specialist area. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of service users and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and improved patient experience through the adoption of person centred care principles. The SMART Service is nurse led, therefore the ability to work autonomously as well as effectively within a team is essential. Job description Job responsibilities As a Vascular Access Clinical Nurse specialist you will work autonomously, therefore we are looking for someone with excellent evidence based experience in the care of acute patients, in depth knowledge, self driven and willing to learn Vascular access as a specialty. Specific training will be provided to facilitate the pathways covered by SMART Vascular Access. Confidence, good communication skills and the ability to make sound decisions is vital. The Clinical Sister / Charge Nurse must also be able to liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate safe effective and timely care practices within the SMART service. The successful post holders main responsibility will be the day to day care of patients who require difficult intravenous access and SMART h@h virtual ward, and also ensuring that all patients referred are triaged and prepared safely to continue their inpatient treatment in an outpatient setting. The Clinical Sister / Charge Nurse must also be able to care for OPAT (Outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy), post-operative patients with a specialist need and medical patients who require specific support following admission. Full support and training will be provided to be able to support these patients safely. As a SMART nurse teaching, auditing, infection control practices and undergoing research are activities undertaken within the role. Be working in an acute sphere of practice and have current experience of administering IV therapies, competent in cannulation, venepuncture, general knowledge of Vascular Access. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality. BSc / 1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification / training / experience. Knowledge Essential Foundation level of understanding regarding the acute care needs of patients. Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues. Knowledge of evidence-based practice. Experience Essential The post holders will have at a minimum 18-months experience of working within the acute and emergency environment. They will have completed Level 1 RCN competencies relevant to the area. Skills Essential All applicants will be able to demonstrate through their portfolio the repertoire of clinical skills they currently possess. This will be built upon through completion of local competencies. Working in acute areas can be stressful, applicants will be required to discuss how they deal with stress to ensure a healthy work lifestyle balance. Post holders will have experience of undertaking clinical audits and working with software systems such as Microsoft Word.
