The Directorate of Technology, Estates and Facilities (DTEF) is the driving force behind the exceptional work, study and research facilities that enrich the student experience, both on campus and online. IT Services is a core group within DTEF, and the Linux, Storage & AWS team is one of six teams within the IT Services Systems & Cloud Transformation group, providing essential IT infrastructure services that form the backbone of the entire University’s operations. The team is a dynamic, friendly and supportive group, working on a hybrid basis, with some days present on our picturesque York campus. The team’s responsibilities span a wide spectrum of cutting-edge technologies, including: AWS: Handling core infrastructure for Amazon Web Services, over 130 AWS accounts Linux Servers: Managing and supporting over 600 VMs and physical servers Massive Storage: Over 7PB of storage, including Dell Isilon, NetApp, and more Campus-Wide Infrastructure: Ensuring seamless operation of DNS, DHCP and NTP Load Balancers: Configuring F5 Big-IP load balancers Email Infrastructure: Overseeing Exim SMTP relays, AWS SES and Google Workspace Monitoring and Graphing: Leveraging Icinga and Grafana for robust monitoring Web Infrastructure: Core components like Apache, Cloudflare and HAProxy Collaboration Tools: GitHub Enterprise Cloud, Jira and Confluence Role

We are seeking an AWS-centric Cloud Infrastructure Engineer who is enthusiastic about technology and ready to take on the challenges of developing, implementing, supporting and maintaining core University cloud infrastructure. As a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in helping to drive the University’s cloud adoption forward. A typical day in this role might include: Deploying and maintaining core AWS infrastructure, including accounts, service control policies and guardrails Developing infrastructure as code using Terraform Coordinating with wider IT teams to create and optimise CI/CD for efficient deployments Supporting the centralised implementation of monitoring, logging, alerting and backups Assisting development teams in designing and implementing scalable AWS architecture, supporting new and existing applications or services Troubleshooting AWS related issues raised by other teams and providing constructive advice Advising on AWS cost optimisation to improve efficiency and minimise cloud spend Automating common tasks using scripts Writing documentation on AWS infrastructure and best practice guides You will have the opportunity to learn, innovate and collaborate within a diverse team. We will provide comprehensive training to equip you with the expertise in our technology stack. Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

Demonstrable experience managing and supporting AWS cloud environments, including AWS Organisations and Control Tower Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (i.e, Terraform) Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices (i.e, Github Actions) Ability to demonstrate IP networking skills, including familiarity with DNS and subnetting Demonstrable programming skills in Python, Ruby or Bash Ability to think creatively and develop innovative technical solutions to unusual problems involving multiple variables Demonstrable understanding of the operational requirements and challenges of supporting high availability IT Systems as part of a team If you are passionate about technology, the world of AWS or IT infrastructure, we want to hear from you!
