We are looking for a dedicated, motivated and enthusiastic registered nurse to join our colorectal cancer nursing team as maternity leave cover. The successful candidate will work with our established nursing team and wider MDT in supporting patients with colorectal cancer throughout their treatment, providing individualised and compassionate care. As a key worker they will coordinate care pathways and provide specialist psychological support and symptom management for patients to ensure timely treatment is given and quality of life is maximised.

This is a challenging role that requires a self-motivated and dedicated individual who will take advantage of the opportunities available to achieve the core cancer CNS competencies. Support and education will be provided using the ACCEND framework and core cancer capabilities in practice.

Although the post is based in the surgical division, the role will include collaborative working with our oncology, chemotherapy and palliative care teams. Applicants will be expected to have excellent communication skills and relevant post-registration experience in colorectal, surgery or oncology nursing.

Main duties of the job

The Colorectal Cancer Nurse Specialist will work with the Colorectal CNS team and the dedicated multi-disciplinary teams within the Trust. This will include having active involvement in the referral, investigations, treatment and follow-up of patients with malignant colorectal disease, providing continuity of care and improving the quality of life for this patient group. To support the Colorectal Cancer CNS team with the provision of the recovery package, personalised care and supportive self-management for patients following treatment and other service developments. Complete holistic needs assessments, formulating care plans and referring to the appropriate services in the hospital or the community. Wherever possible attend Colorectal / Oncology clinics and endoscopy to support cancer patients at initial diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. The CNS will be required to break bad news to patients and their family about their diagnosis with sensitivity and empathy. Discuss aspects of treatment for Colorectal cancer in depth with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise. Act as patient advocate where appropriate. To participate in departmental MDT disease management meetings and co-ordinate patient treatment pathways following each MDT meeting.
