We are looking for a Community Phlebotomist to join our community phlebotomy team, working between the hours of 8.00 am and 4 pm. This service is provided Monday to Friday, and you will work alongside a team of experienced phlebotomists taking blood from patients in their own homes, living in residential care homes, or other community services. There is an expectation to work alone whilst undertaking home visits, and you may be required to cover clinics.

The individual will be responsible for ensuring that blood specimens are taken in a manner that does not cause undue anxiety to the patient and are of good quality for the laboratory. It will also involve using the Coaguchek machine to monitor patients' INR levels for the anti-coagulation clinic.

The individual will also be expected to cover community dermatology clinics.

To fulfil the needs of service delivery to patients/service users and in line with our current team of clinicians, the post holder will work as part of a flexible team over 5 days per week. Various hours and working patterns are available.

A clean driving license and access to a vehicle are essential for this role.

While we would prefer someone who is already competent in venepuncture and the use of a Coagucheck machine, we will be able to offer full training if needed.

You will need to be IT literate, as there is an expectation to be competent in the use of an electronic patient record system following full training to maintain and ensure accurate record keeping.

You will require excellent communication skills, have a kind and caring nature, and be able to show empathy to the patient and their family in times when they may be feeling anxious or distressed.

There is also a requirement to identify those patients who, whilst you are visiting, may be feeling unwell or whose health could be deteriorating and escalate these concerns appropriately.

Key Responsibilities:

Enter patients' details accurately on the phlebotomy system. Provide a helpful and professional service to patients and healthcare staff within the Trust and Primary care professionals, presenting a positive image of themselves. Check patient demographics as per Trust Policy prior to procedure, ensuring request forms are completed accurately. Explain the procedure and put the patient at ease, thus gaining implied consent. Perform venepuncture using protocols as stated in the phlebotomy manual. Ensure blood samples are accurately labelled with patient identifiable demographics as per Trust Policy. Ensure laboratories are provided with timely, high-quality blood specimens taken in tubes that are appropriate for the tests requested. Ensure the patient has recovered sufficiently before leaving the clinic or the phlebotomist leaving the patient's home. General housekeeping duties within the department and notify any damage to equipment. Ensure the phlebotomy manager is aware of equipment needs. Liaise with the line manager regarding any training needs. Cover community dermatology clinics. Support in other teams where needed.
