HPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist Post-graduate doctoral level (or equivalent) training in clinical psychology as accredited by the BPS Desirable criteria
Post-doctoral training/study in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice Additional study/qualifications in illness or health psychology and related treatment Communication and relationship skills
Essential criteria
Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS. Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration. Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups. Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to 'hold' the stress of others. Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours. Desirable criteria

Evidence of highest level of analytical and judgemental skills. A doctoral level of research knowledge. The ability to lead on both clinical and non-clinical research, applying a doctoral level of knowledge and skills in research designs, methods and analyses (including complex multivariate statistics) as practised in the field of clinical psychology. Ability to analyse highly complex psychological data in order to develop individual psychological formulations. Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour. Ability to access and apply literature from related professions (e.g. medicine, dietetics) to psychological assessment and intervention with adults within specialist diabetes care. Desirable criteria
Record of having published in either peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books. Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for people with long-term health conditions. Including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse. Experience of working with adults with diabetes. Demonstrable experience of working with patients with diabetes in an acute hospital.
