Undertake the assessment and triage of acute medical patients referred from the Emergency Department or Primary care to the AMU. The successful candidate will be supported in this role by dedicated junior medical staff rostered to the unit and will provide on-site clinical guidance for this team. Establish an initial investigation and clinical management plan within the Society of Acute Medicine’s 8- (in hours) and 14- hour (overnight) of arrival standards. Partake in the general medical on-call rota at a frequency of 1 in 12 (1 in 6 weekends). Work with the existing Acute Medicine Consultants to develop alternatives to in-patient admission, supported by rapid access to dedicated times for diagnostic services. Develop links with the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit, as detailed in the Royal College of Physicians of London documents, “The Interface of Accident & Emergency and Acute Care Medicine”, “The Interface between Acute Medicine and Critical Care” and “Acute Medical Care ‘the right person, in the right setting – first time’.” Supervise and train junior medical and Advanced Practitioner staff. Participate in the delivery of undergraduate teaching as a clinical teacher. Ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place. Ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported. Actively participate in audit / quality improvement. Provide continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge whilst in the AMU or High Dependency Care area, and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice. Take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported in a timely manner. Undertake Mandatory & Statutory training as determined by the Trust and Clinical Management Group.
