This is a job advertisement for two substantive Consultants in Anaesthesia. The department will strive to accommodate any sub specialty interest including paediatrics, perioperative medicine, intensive care medicine, trauma, obstetrics, acute pain, regional anaesthesia, and teaching. Main duties of the job

The appointee will cover anaesthetic lists at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford and Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup. The candidate will be expected to participate in an on-call out-of-hours consultant rota covering the acute anaesthetic services at Darent Valley hospital. This includes managing sick laparotomies, obstetric services and stabilising critically ill children prior to transfer to a tertiary centre via STRS. At present the frequency is 1:17 but this can change depending on the number of consultants available to participate in this rota. The appointee will have the option of moving a theatre session (or the whole day) post on-call to another day in the immediate week to facilitate adequate rest. Rest facilities for overnight nap are available in the anaesthetic office if required. About us

Job responsibilities

The appointee will be based at Darent Valley Hospital. The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department. He/she may be asked to cover lists in Sidcup as a part of the job plan. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and the running of his/her clinical department. For purposes of management and use of resources he/she will be accountable to the Clinical Director of the Critical Care Directorate working closely with the General Manager and he/she will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated. Participate actively and at times take a lead in research and clinical audit projects, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties. The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision, management of junior staff and participate in their appointment with other Consultants. The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff. Qualifications

MBBS or equivalent FRCA or equivalent Licence to practice and full registration with GMC; On the specialist register for Anaesthetics scheduled to obtain this within 6 months of the date of interview but before starting in post. Experience in any anaesthetic specialty sub interests including ICM. Training and experience

Ability to do a wide range of anaesthetic lists including obstetrics and paediatrics. Able to look after sick children while awaiting retrieval along with the paediatric consultant. Able to look after high risk patients for elective and emergency surgery. Demonstration of commitment to Anaesthesia such as relevant audits, publications, introduction of guidelines, relevant courses etc. Administration

Experience of organisation and running of Theatres in a busy DGH anaesthetic department. Familiar with current structure of the National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes. Management

Ability to manage the theatre floor including the 'Starred role' once settled into the job. An in-depth understanding of the NHS in general - its challenges and its relevance to the consultant role. Management course and/or qualification. Quality Improvement Projects / Audit

Thorough understanding of principles of QIP / medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed QIP / audit projects in the past. Research and Publications

Able to demonstrate an interest in research. Able to appraise research and audit results and apply the information in daily practice. Experience of clinical research culminating in publication. Publication of review articles or case reports. Research Methodology Course. Teaching

Experience of post-graduate teaching. Certificate course in teaching. Experience as an Educational Supervisor. Teaching nursing staff and other professional groups. Disclosure and Barring Service Check
