Full Time - 10 PA's Applications are invited for an experienced specialist for the post of Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join our high performing Accident and Emergency Department. Successful applicant, experience permitting, may also be invited for an interview for the Clinical Director of Emergency Department upon the commencement of the post. Darent Valley Hospital is a busy, expanding district general hospital with excellent transport links to central London and Kent. Our ED offers a range of different facilities, including a paediatric ED, Ambulatory Emergency Care and GP streaming hub. This post is offered on a full-time basis. The candidate should possess a CCT (or be within three months of obtaining), and should be listed on the Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post. Active participation in Research, Audit and Teaching is encouraged and supported. The candidate will need to demonstrate professional excellence and ability to deliver effective care. Main duties of the job

Our Emergency Medicine Consultants pride themselves on providing a high quality and visible "shop floor" leadership presence, together with high standards of education, training, research and audit. The post holders will work in close co-operation with nursing, managerial and medical colleagues to provide high quality and timely healthcare to the Trust's patients. The Consultant will have responsibility for the efficient reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and management of all emergencies attending the department. The Consultant will ensure that after the appropriate initial management, the patients are dispersed into hospital beds, specialist units, other hospitals, either local or regional, or to the main operating theatres as the case may be, in accordance with the Admissions Policy. The Consultant will need to manage patients within the department's boundary, including the short stay area adjacent to the emergency department, except where this is negotiated with the Clinical director. The post-holder will be responsible for the supervision and management of the middle grade associates, acute care common stem trainees, GP specialty trainees, foundation year 2 trainees and to support the clinical activities of the emergency nurse practitioners. The Consultant will have shared responsibility for the proper functioning of the department and for ensuring that all attending patients receive timely and correct care and, where appropriate, be transferred to the necessary specialty team or discharged safely. The post-holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of attending patients and the smooth, efficient running of the clinical department. For purposes of management and use of resources, the Consultant will be accountable to the Clinical Director and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated. You will provide prospective cover for colleagues on a mutually agreed basis in respect of absence from duty. You will be expected to cooperate in the present agreed framework of the directorate management structure arrangements. The post holder undertakes to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. The Consultant will be required to assist the trust management and its appointed agents during investigations into claims alleging medical negligence and, where requested, to provide related factual statements. You will be expected to have a role in developing and supporting the future strategy for Emergency Medicine services for the population served by the Emergency Department. This will involve close working with other trust departments and local CCGs and other partnering organisations outside the Trust. Person Specification

Qualifications

GMC Recognised Medical Degree (MBBS or Equivalent). On Specialist Register, or confirmed expectation within 6 months of appointment. Postgraduate diploma: FRCEM or recognised equivalent Postgraduate diploma: MRCEM, MRCP (UK or Ireland), MRCS/FRCS or equivalent APLS provider or equivalent ATLS provider Knowledge

Clinical Governance principles Awareness of current emergency and general medical practices Safeguarding principles and recognition of indicators Experience

Advanced competency in prevention, diagnosis and management of the acute and urgent aspects of illness & injury within a full spectrum of undifferentiated physical and behavioural disorders, encompassing a wide range of pathology from the life threatening to the self-limiting. Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates Experience of clinical audit. Skills

Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to effectively undertake the role of consultant. Open and maintain the airway in the emergency setting (insertion of oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal airway) Assessment of breathing & ventilation, appropriate use of oxygen therapy, bag & mask ventilation ENT skills - anterior rhinoscopy, insertion of nasal pack, otoscopy.
