Illustrative job plan (proposed)

3.5 PA of clinic (3 general neurology clinics per week and 1 subspecialty clinic per fortnight)

1.75 PA of admin time for these clinics

2 PA of ward referrals

1 PA for enhanced triage

0.25 PA for department and neuroradiology meetings

0.4 PA for On-call (Regional Neurology Rota based at Southampton)

1.5 SPA (SPA allocations can be reviewed annually subject to approval from the Medical Director)

Travel time as required

Main duties of the job The role incorporates regular general outpatient neurology clinics together with an inpatient liaison service.

Neuro-radiology meetings occur twice a month in Winchester. A clinical governance or management meeting is held on the other weeks of the month. On service effectiveness and development, we work closely with the Long Term Conditions Operational Service Managers.

The successful candidate would be expected to commit to the on-going development of care within the Medical Division; to take part in the education of junior medical staff, nursing staff and allied health professionals; to contribute to the governance activity and medical management of the department; and to foster the cohesiveness and teamwork in the wider neurology team.

The post is linked to the regional neurosciences centre at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), where our patients requiring inpatient management are admitted; and where there will be the opportunity to undertake subspecialist work. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in UHS governance activity and continuing medical education sessions.

There is full secretarial support with an administration team consisting of a Speciality Co-ordinator (Neurology) and support staff on both main hospital sites. Each Consultant has dedicated office space and supporting IT.

Research & Teaching skills

Evidence of participation in research

Continuing to commit to medical education

Experience of Teaching (Medical Students, peers, MDT)

Publications in peer reviewed journals

Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course

Clinical Skills & Ability

Strong clinical and personal capability

Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Conceptual and analytical skills

Evidence of implementing evidence based guidelines

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

Wide experience in all aspects of Rheumatology

Experienced in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance and the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients

To provide a range of services to compliment the current skill mix of the department.

Participation in local and national audit

Management training and experience

CCT (be within 6 months of their CCT date at time of interview) in Rheumatology/ Rheumatology & General Internal Medicine

MRCP or equivalent

GMC registration

Attended appropriate training courses

MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
