To do this, we use data, intelligence and a place-based approach to lead and deliver Scotland’s public health priorities.The Post:We are looking for a Consultant to lead our Health Protection Enteric Pathogens team in our Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate. You may have a specialist registration in any of the following areas; • Public Health (Medicine) • Microbiology • Infectious Diseases As well as full time applications we are happy to hear from candidates who may be interested in a split role e.g. to continue to work in academia, labs or front-line services. The post reports directly to the Head of Infections Services and will work closely with other PHS topic teams such as Zoonosis and Public Health Microbiology; and externally with a wide range of partners including NHS Boards, Laboratories, Food Standards Scotland and Scottish Government. Your key responsibilities will include: • Lead on health protection topic area aimed at reducing the risks and burdens from infections and environmental challenges. • Direct the teams input into the management and investigation of relevant incident and outbreaks, supporting NHS boards with their incidents and outbreaks and lead a national incident management team when appropriate.• Participate in multi-agency planning and preparedness and the development of protocols for responding to any emerging infectious and environmental threats to the population of Scotland. • Develop and maintain close working links with key stakeholders e.g. Scottish Government, NHS boards, local authorities, SEPA, Scottish National agencies, academic bodies, etc. • Support the development and maintenance of epidemic intelligence systems designed to monitor levels of infectious and environmental hazards and their consequences and the impact on these of health protection interventions. • Oversee the design, processing and uses of data so that findings of significance are identified, their relevance to risks to public health assessed and when necessary, alerts or other communications issued. • Ensure the provision of expert advice on the epidemiology, prevention and control of relevant diseases including maintaining links with key local, UK and international experts and participating in PHS knowledge management systems. A more comprehensive list of responsibilities can be found in the job description. The successful candidate will provide leadership, management and expert specialist advice on issues relating to to enteric pathogen, which includes health protection investigation, risk assessment and response to enteric pathogen outbreaks. The candidate will lead evaluation of effectiveness of interventions and improve outcomes for people in communities and develop a culture that will focus on impact, reducing inequalities and solutions.The Candidate:We are looking for an experienced Consultant with expertise and knowledge in health protection, with an interest in enteric pathogens to strengthen our expertise in Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate. Experienced candidates from alternate, complimentary clinical pathways of clinical infectious disease or microbiology will also be welcomed. You will either be a GMC/GDC registered professional, who is also on the specialist register in an appropriate area, or on the UK Public Health Register. Regardless of qualification, you should be able to demonstrate the following: • Minimum 6 months training in health protection • Documented evidence of current or past competence at the level required to be designated as a Competent Person under the 2008 Public Health (Scotland) Act• Able to build networks with a range of colleagues from different disciplines engaged in Health Protection• Lead and report on epidemiological investigations • Communicate on risks to public health especially to NHS professionals and the media• Strategic thinker with proven leadership skills• Experience of leading an incident management team• Health protection experience at a local, regional or national level in Gastrointestinal pathogens• Effective interpersonal, motivational and influencing skills• Substantially numerate, with highly developed analytical skills using qualitative and quantitative dataPlease note if successful in your application, you will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme check. If you have lived or worked overseas for more than 12 months in the last 5 years you will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.Location and Working Pattern:Location: The post can be based in either Central Quay, Glasgow or Gyle Square, Edinburgh. PHS operates a flexible, hybrid working model which can be negotiated Please note that PHS is currently in the process of relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow from early 2025.Work Pattern: Monday to Friday with on call, 37 hours per week (Agenda for Change) or 40 hours per week (M&D T&C’s). The post-holder will be expected to participate in the out of hours on-call service provision which is around a 1 in 8 week frequency pro rata.PHS is a flexible employer, and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns.This post is eligible for re-allocation expenses within the UK, should candidates require to move base in order to take up post.
