Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust would like to invite applications for a substantive consultant post in Ophthalmology, to join the existing team of six Ophthalmologists providing acute and out-patient care to the population of Northamptonshire and surrounding regions. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic full-time consultant ophthalmologist. The post is for a consultant with a sub-specialist interest in Cornea and Anterior Segment and high volume Cataract surgery to complement the department based at Kettering. This is a replacement post and to add to our existing team of consultants. The Department of Ophthalmology at Kettering General Hospital is committed to providing high quality, patient centred care and it is expected the successful candidate will be an exceptional and highly motivated individual, working with a similar ethos. The post-holder will participate in the Ophthalmology on call rota at the Trust and support the Eye Casualty service. Main duties of the job

The new appointee will share responsibilities with consultant colleagues for providing a high standard of comprehensive eye care and will be expected to develop services in their special interest, not only within the Kettering NHS Trust but with the local corneal services at Leicester and Northampton at a later date, as part of an ongoing countrywide strategy for developing acute services. The successful candidate will also have one dedicated session supporting the Eye casualty service. The consultant will be part of the Corneal MDT group based at Leicester and will be able to avail of peer support. The on-call commitment is one week in seven and covers the north of the county and is based at Kettering. Other duties include the full range of administrative activities involved in running the clinics and department including training and supervision of junior staff and supervision of clinical audit as well as working with other specialities. The appointee will be expected to take part in CME activities in line with College recommendations. The appointee will be expected to work closely with the Clinical Lead and existing colleagues within the department to maximise clinic and theatre utilisation to achieve the agreed targets. The SPA component is made up of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings etc.) and non-core activities. Non-core activities are discussed and agreed within the Trust (via an agreed tariff and, on occasion, through ad personal agreement). Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. Following appointment, non-core SPA may be used to participate in our consultant development programme, or in acquiring or consolidating specific skills and expertise. Non-core SPA is only available if specific activities and objectives are mutually agreed in job planning. Timetable of Fixed Commitments There will be 10 sessions per week (full-time), six of which will be fixed clinical sessions (including 2 specialty clinics). The post attracts 11 programmed activities. It should be emphasised that this is a provisional timetable and there may be a possibility of altering or adjusting it as the department develops further with 3 session working days and virtual clinics. Education, Training & Qualifications

Medical degree FRCS or equivalent. Full GMC registration. On Specialist Registrar/Accreditation Will be required to maintain a full registration with General Medical Council Knowledge & Experience

Minimum of 7 years postgraduate experience, including higher surgical training. Part of this period may be in a post equivalent with responsibility and training potential At least 3 years’ experience higher surgical training in approved ophthalmology post Extensive experience in management of ophthalmology conditions Proven involvement in clinical audit Proven track record of ophthalmology research with evidence of publications Special interest that complements the Department Commitment to clinical risk management and clinical governance Skills

Good written and verbal communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels Ability to teach effectively to all levels of staff Ability to motivate and develop junior medical staff Ability to plan, implement and evaluate research. Participate in and implement audits. Be actively involved with Risk Management strategies Flexible approach, able to work independently and as part of a team.
