A whole-time post for Consultant Paediatric Oncologist/Haematologist with expertise in Haemato-Oncology is available now at the John Radcliffe Hospital/Children’s Hospital of Oxford. The post is for 10.0 programmed activities (PAs). The postholder will work alongside the current three paediatric oncologists and three paediatric haematologists.

The Children’s Hospital Oxford (CHOX) at the John Radcliffe Hospital (JRH) Campus is the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) providing tertiary haematology/oncology services for designated Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs) in Swindon, Reading, Milton Keynes, High Wycombe/Stoke Mandeville and Slough (Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital). Inpatient facilities are based on Kamran’s Ward at the Children’s Hospital Oxford. This dedicated 9-bedded ward provides care for patients requiring chemotherapy or for the management of treatment- or disease-related complications. Other wards within the hospital are used to accommodate outliers when required. There are approximately 115 new referrals per year of children with malignant disease. The number of referrals has been increasing year on year. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main duties of consultant:

Clinical: The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of patients with haemato-oncological malignancies aged 0 – 19 years and also manage non-malignant haematology patients and haemoglobinopathy patients (2PA). The post holder will participate in the 1 in 6 “consultant of the week” system, providing cross cover for in-patient activity, dealing with new referrals, initial diagnostic work-up, planning and delivery of treatment and care. The post-holder will work as an integral member of the team, attending and contributing to the established Oxford multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. The post-holder will share responsibilities to review patients on the day unit, supporting the fellows and staff grades, and independently lead outpatient clinics. The postholder will provide advice and support to the other paediatric specialists within CHOX Children’s Services and paediatricians within the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance. Chemotherapy prescribing The Post holder will prescribe SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) as per the guidelines in the prescribing policy. On-treatment outpatient care is delivered on Kamran’s Day Care, a separate area for the administration of chemotherapy, blood products and assessment of patients. Full GMC with licence to practice MBBS or equivalent MRCPCH or equivalent Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and be on the specialist register, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills Higher medical degree FRCPath Experience

Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training CSAC can advise here. As the attached Representative you will be a member of the relevant subspecialty Valid APLS and NLS Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems. Experience working in NHS Wider experience, research, and training, in providing subspecialty service (if applicable.) Skills

Willing to work unsupervised and make decisions Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively Meets the requirements of the GMC’s ‘Good Medical Practice’ Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project, understanding the role of these in improving the medical practice Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence, so as to improve clinical outcomes Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
