This exciting post offers the opportunity to work in a first-class vascular and endovascular service. The appointee will form an integral part of vascular surgical services for the Gloucestershire and Swindon Vascular Network, with the hub based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and the two spokes at Cheltenham General Hospital and the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Main duties of the job

In 2014, the Trust centralised all inpatient arterial vascular surgery for the network onto one site and vascular workload has increased since completion of the Network agreement with Swindon (yielding a population of around 1 million). A wide variety of vascular conditions are treated by the service. We have a state-of-the-art Hybrid theatre, and a full range of vascular and endovascular procedures are performed. The post holders will benefit from substantial existing practice in aortic aneurysm surgery, both EVAR and open, carotid surgery, arterial bypass and reconstructive surgery, and venous intervention (including open surgery, foam sclerotherapy, endothermal ablation as well as acute and chronic deep venous intervention). We are well supported by nearby Tertiary Vascular Units for supra-renal and thoracic aortic work.

Job responsibilities

  • To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts and Divisions services plans
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division or the Trust.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Full General Medical Council registration.
  • On Specialist Register for Vascular Surgery via: CCT or CESR-CP (Combined Programme) (proposed CCT/CESR-CP date must be within 6 months of interview). Consideration will be given to conditional offers for candidates within 2 years of their CCT date who commit to joining the service.
  • Higher degree relevant to the specialty.
  • Training and experience in renal access surgery, distal bypass surgery and endovascular intervention.

Clinical experience

  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on specialist problems in Vascular Surgery.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Validated logbook indicating adequate and appropriate level of specialist Vascular and Endovascular surgical operative experience.
  • Training and experience in angioplasty and endovenous techniques.
  • Evidence of participation in Audit and Clinical Governance Programmes.
  • Ability to manage and lead a surgical firm.

Teaching experience

  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.

Research experience

  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
  • Ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
