About the team: Jisc's Security Operations team safeguards both the Janet Network and Internal security whilst also sharing intelligence and advising our members to keep their own networks safe. Our teams work tirelessly to mitigate attacks and resolve security incidents for the UK's national research and education sectors and partners. We are committed to staying ahead of threat actors and strengthening the cybersecurity of the UK's institutions. Jisc's new Security Centre comprises of a Cyber Security Incident Response (CSIRT), Digital Forensics Incident Response (DFIR), SIEM analysts, and Network Defensive Services teams who help our members to navigate these challenges. About the role: This is a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on experience of Jisc's Security Operations Centre Service, gaining varied and valuable experience within the CSIRT team. Responsibilities will include: Triage and respond to security alerts and tickets - recognising the need to escalate. Participate in incident handling duties as part of the Janet network CSIRT function. Threat detection and analysis - using a range of Jisc-developed and commercial network and security-related tools to gather intelligence, mitigate attacks and provide a SOC and incident response capability. Take part in the development of incident response drills and exercises to improve processes and procedures and to define improvements to incident response metrics. Support the continuous monitoring of SOC customer IT infrastructure, networks, and systems for signs of suspicious or malicious activity. Maintain the integrity of evidence during information gathering and investigation actions. We know you may not tick every box, and that's okay - we're more interested in your potential. If you have most of what we're looking for, we encourage you to apply. Key Skills and Experience: Minimum of 5 GCSE grades A*-C/9-4 or equivalent (including English Language and Maths). Basic understanding of a variety of operating systems and knowledge of at least one operating system. Understanding of computing concepts incl. Windows and Mac desktop operating systems. Experience working as part of a team (can be from school, sports, clubs, or volunteer work). Good communication skills. Ability to remain calm under pressure. While not essential, we would value candidates who bring any of the following: previous experience with a range of security tools and systems (e.g. EDRs, SIEMs, SOARD and IDSs), coordinating group projects (such as school events or clubs), basic understanding of IT networking concepts including firewalls, routers, etc., customer service experience from part-time work, an interest in technology, or any IT-related subjects at GCSE/A-Level. Online courses in Cyber Security would be advantageous, even if these are free courses. A natural problem-solving mindset and any basic understanding of computer security, privacy and data protection law as it applies in the UK would also be beneficial, though full training will be provided.
