We’re an environment, social and governance (‘ESG’) and sustainability consultancy that helps medium and large companies do better things for people and the environment. Our primary services are developing ESG strategies and carbon/Net Zero strategies. Clients choose us over other consultancies for two reasons – our level of technical expertise and our pragmatic approach. We focus on what companies can and will do, enabling that rather than blue-sky thinking. Ultimately, we want to see our recommendations get put into practice. Our clients stay with us and keep coming back because we don’t act like consultants – we become part of our clients’ teams, always over-delivering, and effectively and transparently managing our projects to meet all deadlines. We’ve been in business for six years and are a tiny but mighty team of two. Historically, we have used contractors to support operational delivery, but with a hefty pipeline of work, we’re now ready to grow our team with a full-time resource. www.rawstoneconsulting.co.uk . The role
This data analyst role is for a brilliant numbers geek who can also communicate effectively. You’ll be responsible for collating and crunching environmental data, particularly carbon-related information. The numbers here are complex - they come from a wide range of sources and require various manipulations, which must be accurate. While there are many software-based carbon tools out there (and they are our competitors!), we use Excel as it is the only way to produce bespoke outputs in a simple format. Software tools cannot automate all the various data points and calculations in a user-friendly way. We pride ourselves on delivering client-perfect, accurate, and beautifully presented spreadsheets, no two of which are the same – which keeps the job interesting. While you don’t need to know how to do carbon calculations now, you must have a desire to spend most of your day in front of Excel and/or scrutinizing the GHG Protocol, with a fastidious approach to data quality. A key component of this role is communication, as you will be client-facing. This means attending client meetings (via Teams), emailing data anomaly queries, and being a personable character to deal with. We want someone who is polite, friendly, and has a natural ability to turn technical carbon/data language into user-friendly terms. Your responsibilities
Project management:
For each project, you’ll collectively agree on a project plan with the client. You’ll be responsible for shaping these plans and ensuring that your elements are tracked and delivered on time. Data gathering:
Engaging with the client to gather raw data for calculations – suppliers' invoices, waste reports, spend information, etc. Data computations:
Setting up spreadsheets to present data and conduct calculations (e.g., consolidating data from multiple sources and converting it into carbon emissions). Data analysis:
Identifying data anomalies and working with the client to resolve issues or use suitable estimation alternatives. Data interpretation:
Analyzing trends and insights from the data. Determining why data has changed over time and the forward implications on target delivery. Record keeping:
Keeping fastidious records of data sources, client explanations/reviews, and developing audit packs. Documenting methodologies:
Writing formal methodology statements for the process undertaken and making recommendations for process improvement opportunities. Communicating:
Communicating findings with clients and auditors through slide-decks and Teams calls in a professional and well-presented manner. While these are the core responsibilities of the role, we are a small business with huge opportunities for projects and personal development outside of these. When client work is quiet, we will ask you to support business improvement projects, allowing you to develop new skills in areas you are keen to learn about. Who you are
You don’t need to have a background or experience in ESG or carbon calculations (although an interest is a must!), but you must have the following combination of skills that are important for this role: You must have a degree in a science-based subject. You must have at least 2 years’ experience in a corporate environment. You must be excellent with Excel, meaning you are speedy, accurate, adept at spotting errors, and skilled at building in checks that prevent errors. You must like to make your work look pretty, believing in high-quality presentation that matches high-quality content. You must be a self-starter, given freedom to operate but needing to be self-motivated and confident to ask questions. You must have good communication skills, meaning you are a proficient writer, adept at presenting via MS Teams, and skilled at responding to challenging questions articulately. You must be organized, as our projects require complex data gathering and error spotting, and you must be efficient at tracking and driving progress. Salary is negotiable and will be based on your fit and experience for the role. Hybrid requirements are 3 days in the office, which can be reduced to 1-2 over time.
