Job Summary

This is a newly created role which will form a crucial part of the senior leadership of the Judicial Office focusing on improving the services we deliver to our staff and to the judiciary. The organisation has grown rapidly over the past few years enabling us to take opportunities but also providing challenges for us in evolving a single culture across the organisation and in growing our services to staff at the right scale and pace. The successful candidate will lead on evolving the range and quality of corporate services that our staff need including financial management, people services and facilities. They will also lead their teams to deliver internal communications to JO staff as well as communications between the judiciary and from the judiciary to the wider public. They will lead our international team who are focused on delivering our international engagement strategy for the judiciary and supporting our judges to continue to promote our world leading rule of law status which attracts legal business to this jurisdiction.

The role provides a unique blend of delivery of core services to staff with engagement with and influencing of the senior judiciary in some of their priority areas. You will be joining a workforce and senior team with a shared sense of purpose in supporting the judiciary to effectively deliver their critical role of impartially delivering justice in the interests of a democratic society.

Person Specification

Finalise the implementation of reform of the corporate services teams including finalising structures and services offered to the wider organisation. Establish effective internal systems and controls to effectively manage the JO’s finances and risks in accordance with relevant legislation and government policies. Ensure high quality advice and options are provided to JOMB for collective decision making on strategic matters impacting the organisation. Act as a collaborative and constructive member of JOMB, role-modelling trust and partnership across the organisation. Champion the work of JO and its staff with the judiciary and more widely. Develop, lead and embed a strong organisational culture consistent with organisational values, including collaboration, inclusivity, and diversity. Ensure a constructive, equal relationship with MOJ finance and HR balancing transparency and guarding public money with proportionality of process. Lead on internal and external communications strategy and delivery for the Judicial Office and Judiciary. Enable a clearer link between JOMB and the Judicial Executive Board, translating judicial strategic objectives into the annual business plan for the JO. Supporting the Chief Executive to maintain constructive working relationships with the Lady Chief Justice and members of JEB. Lead on the annual negotiation of sitting days across all court jurisdictions with HMCTS and MOJ, providing advice to the LCJ and SPT on that process. Supporting the senior judiciary to develop and deliver an impactful international strategy for the benefit of the UK. Represent the CEO as required, including engagement with the LCJ, senior judges and senior officials across Whitehall. Acting as a primary escalation point for urgent, complex or highly sensitive issues, determining appropriate responses and the need for further escalation to the CEO.
