Deputy Head of Nursing

to join our senior nursing leadership team within the Division of Medicine. This is a key role, offering an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of our patients and the wider healthcare system. As Deputy Head of Nursing, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Head of Nursing in overseeing the delivery of high-quality nursing care, implementing best practice, and ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and satisfaction. You will be instrumental in driving the nursing strategy, leading teams, and supporting the development of clinical and managerial staff. Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities: Lead and support the nursing workforce, providing direction and inspiration to ensure collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based nursing practice. Oversee the quality and safety of nursing services, ensuring compliance with national and local policies, protocols, and regulations. Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies to improve patient outcomes and enhance the patient experience. Lead workforce planning and support the recruitment, development, and retention of nursing staff. Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for nursing leaders and clinical staff. Act as a role model for the values of NHS Wales, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and commitment to delivering patient-centred care. Qualifications and Knowledge

Master's degree level or demonstrable equivalent level of knowledge and work experience. Evidence of recent, relevant continual professional development. Understanding of the role and its purpose within the organisation or equivalent level of experience. Knowledge of the NHS, Welsh Government and Health Board strategies, policies and plans, including HR. In-depth knowledge of the strategic healthcare agenda. Experience

Extensive experience working at a senior level in a large complex organisation. Previous senior management experience responsible for service development and planning. Experience in commissioning primary care services including the management of primary care contracts. Experience of planning and implementing long-term strategy. Experience of working effectively as part of a multi-professional team to improve services. Experience of working across organisational boundaries to deliver improvements. Good track record in effective financial planning, management and delivery of targets. Possess significant experience of financial management and knowledge of how to deliver a budget to target. Experience in interpreting complex national primary care policy or statutory frameworks and from these creating and presenting credible local policies and commissioning frameworks to ensure ownership and delivery within a local context. Experience of performance management and partnership working in an NHS setting. Evidence of leading complex change & strategy in a political & sensitive environment. Proven track record of successfully introducing service improvement or successful management of significant organisational change in a complex environment. Experience of interagency working and the development of collaborative and effective partnerships in the planning and delivery of services. Ability to influence at all levels and a highly strategic thinker. Experience of public engagement/patient involvement activities including presenting to large groups. Project and programme management. Direct experience of working effectively with(in) Primary Care. Experience of planning and implementing long-term strategy. Skills and Attributes

Highly numerate and analytical. Ability to provide advice after considering a complex range of options where there is conflicting information. Proven ability to achieve targets and objectives within a demanding and pressured environment against challenging deadlines. Sound judgment, decision making, and organisational skills. Ability to negotiate and influence outcomes applicable to the negotiation of primary care services. Able to demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills, displaying credibility, influence and political acumen. Excellent oral and written communication skills when dealing with highly complex and sensitive information in a manner which is clear, fluent and persuasive. Ability to manage conflict particularly in terms of competing priorities. Self-motivated and committed to developing self and team members. Proven ability to articulate and communicate highly complex ideas to a wide range of audiences, on a one-to-one basis or in small or large groups, often in a pressured & politically sensitive environment. Ability to develop credible business cases or service development plans, articulating (verbally and in writing) the rationale for change and financial, legal, political, service and risk implications, and setting out rational options for future action. Ability to empower, coach and support staff. Ability to work on own initiative and organise own workload and that of the team to operate effectively. Politically astute and high level of intuition.
