The Deputy Head of Year will play a crucial role within the school supporting the Head of Year to ensure the best possible educational experience and outcomes, along with pastoral wellbeing for a particular cohort of students. The successful candidate will assist the Head of Year in effectively leading their team, providing a clear vision and direction, and identifying areas for improvement. They will also contribute to a positive and ambitious pastoral team ethos within the Pastoral Team. The successful candidate will coordinate and manage the work of the year team to meet school and national requirements of policy and practice thereby supporting overall pupils’ progress.
The Deputy Head of Year will: Establish purposeful working relationships with pupils and encourage high expectations. Lead on the monitoring of attendance and punctuality to identify students who are a concern and take the initiative to follow up verbally and/or in writing with students, parents and appropriate staff. Set individual and group targets for improvement in consultation with Head of Year, tutors and other professionals to support pupils’ progress. Check registers for attendance and punctuality on a daily basis. Make absence calls for the cohort. Monitor and supervise students who are on daily reports so that they can better understand what they are required to do to progress. Undertake initial investigation into incidents for review and action by Head of Year. Assist with the organising and running of after school detentions. Supervise and support students in C4 Isolation. Where required, be part of rota for a Student Support Services System, which will include monitoring late arrivals and carrying out uniform and equipment checks. Spend some time each day visiting lessons to ensure a positive learning environment is maintained, responding to requests to support behaviour in a lesson when required. Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom. Actively contribute to the system of praise and reward in the year group. Use specialist skills/training/experience to support pupils. Organise interventions including telephone calls home, letters home and parental interviews where a student’s punctuality, attendance or academic focus are a concern. Take individuals and small groups for a range of intervention and mentoring strategies.
Qualifications: • Maths & English • Other relevant qualification
Experience: • Experience in a pastoral role, supporting student welfare and progress.
Knowledge: • Understanding of school policies and national educational requirements. • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. • Ability to develop and implement behaviour and discipline strategies. • Knowledge of child protection, inclusion, and safeguarding policies.
Skills: • Commitment. • Excellent numeracy/literacy skills. • Effective communication with students, staff & visitors. • Ability to prioritise effectively. • Work constructively as part of a team, understanding School roles and responsibilities and your own position within these. • Good organisation and personal management skills.
