Deputy Laboratory Manager An opportunity for a Deputy Laboratory Manager has arisen at the Wales Veterinary Science Centre (WVSC). Both full-time (37.5 hrs/week) or part-time working will be considered, however, there would be a requirement for the post holder to work on Mondays and Fridays in order to ensure full laboratory cover throughout the week. Salary in the region of £29,605 – 32,928 depending on qualifications and experience. Main Roles and Responsibilities

To assist the Laboratory Manager in the delivery of laboratory services to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 by means of: Performing laboratory tests to the required standard Performing audits across all areas of laboratory activities and accredited scope Investigating nonconformances Assisting with the validation of new tests and preparation of extensions to scope Assisting with the continued improvement, development and testing of LIMS (laboratory information management system) Contributing to the smooth day-to-day running of the laboratory, including: Receiving and checking-in samples Preparing samples for testing e.g. centrifugation Performing tests (including ELISAs, ectoparasite identification and faecal egg counts, bacteriological staining). Training for all tests will be provided. Preparing results reports Reporting results to customers, eradication schemes and surveillance networks Use of LIMS Carrying out work in accordance with quality standards (ISO/IEC 17025) Cleaning and disinfecting the working environment and the maintenance of equipment Accurate record keeping e.g. labelling samples, records of samples stored, equipment maintenance and calibration records Adherence to health and safety protocols for themselves and others Arranging the ordering of consumables as required Assisting with animal Post-Mortem examinations mostly on livestock, including: Assisting with carcass dissection and preparation of samples Cleaning down the post mortem room and the correct disposal of animal byproduct waste Correct packaging and post of biological samples in accordance with current regulations. Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant science discipline Previous experience of working in a laboratory/testing environment Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills Attention to detail and ability to follow laboratory protocols Ability to work to strict deadlines Excellent IT skills and confidence in developing and testing new IT systems.
