The Register Office is looking to expand its pool of casual deputy registrars. Applicants can apply either for weddings only or for weddings plus office duties which include the registration of births, deaths, production of certificates, and covering reception. For weddings, the post will require registering and performing marriage ceremonies at the Register Office and at our approved venues (e.g., hotels). For office duties, you will be based at the Register Office in the Town Hall, Darlington. Previous experience is not essential as training will be given. Applicants will need experience of working with the public in a frontline customer role and be confident in public speaking. Applicants for the office duties will also need the ability to understand and apply rules and procedures, take payments from customers, maintain accurate records, and have good organisational skills. Good IT skills are essential, including proficiency in MS Office (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel) and the ability to use other bespoke systems for making appointments, taking payments, and recording registrations. Registrars attending weddings are required to wear a uniform, which is provided. As part of a pool of casual registrars, the number of hours allocated varies according to demand. Wedding registrars are required predominantly at weekends, including bank holidays, but some weekday weddings are available. Office-based registrars for other duties are required Monday to Friday. The following are disqualified from applying for the post of deputy registrar: Independent celebrants; Funeral Directors or persons involved in the burial or cremation business; Midwives; Authorised persons for marriage/civil partnership; Secretary of Synagogues or Registering Officers for the Society of Friends; Ministers of Religion; Medical Practitioners; or anyone engaged in the business of life insurance.
