An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the elective Orthopaedic nursing team as a Deputy Ward Manager. This is a fixed term post to cover maternity leave.

The post is for 24 hours per week. Shifts will be allocated over a 7 day period.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be:

You should be able to work as part of a team and be able to use your initiative. Excellent communication skills and flexibility to meet the needs of the service. Have the opportunity to work closely with members of the multidisciplinary team, which will provide the candidate with advanced knowledge and skills to provide high standards of care to our patients. Working closely with the ward manager and deputising in their absence.

Job responsibilities

Manage the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager, coordinating the activities of the ward team and deploying resources effectively. Ensure that effective communication is maintained both within the ward itself and with relevant external agencies or individuals. Organise own workload and adjust priorities in response to issues arising in the workplace. Recognise and respond appropriately to issues which require urgent or immediate attention, reporting to other members of the multi-disciplinary/management team as necessary. Deputise for the ward manager as requested at meetings and other events. Maintain ward management records and produce timely management reports at the request of the ward manager or as required in his/her absence. Maintain comprehensive clinical records. Complete ward audits and contribute to ward improvements.

Qualifications

Essential

Registered nurse with a degree or diploma in nursing.

Desirable

Leadership qualification (e.g. LEO). Teaching/assessing certificate.

Experience

Essential

Extensive post-registration experience. Experience of working autonomously. Experience of MDT working. Experience in leading a team.

Desirable

NHS experience.

Skills

Essential

Communication. Prioritise and time management. Computer skills. Phlebotomy and cannulation. Line care. Teaching and delegation.

Knowledge

Essential

Awareness of risk management. Up to date knowledge of current changes within the NHS/ward.

Desirable

Awareness of budget.

Additional

Essential

Organised. Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation. Flexible.
