We have an exciting opportunity to join the expanding Tor team as our new editorial assistant. We are looking for someone who is conscientious, detail-oriented, dedicated, and highly organized to provide editorial and administrative support for our busy editorial team.
Your team:
You will be an integral part of the close-knit, innovative Tor team, working on a wide range of speculative fiction. Tor is an internationally celebrated imprint specializing in speculative fiction/science fiction and fantasy, with sister imprints in the US and Germany. Tor UK’s prestigious list includes V. E. Schwab, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Talia Hibbert, Olivie Blake, and Carissa Broadbent. In autumn 2024, we launched Bramble, our fantasy romance and romantasy list, with our horror list, Tor Nightfire, coming in 2025 and ambitious plans to expand our genre fiction lists further.
Your role:
As the Editorial Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the editorial process from manuscript to publication and be responsible for the smooth running of our administrative processes. You will have the opportunity to assist in the development and production of a wide range of speculative fiction and be a key support in keeping books on track from the moment of submission all the way through to publication and beyond.
Your key responsibilities:
Providing administrative and editorial support to the editorial team at large.
Reading and reporting on new submissions.
Proofing jackets and covers and working with the editorial team on cover copy, straplines, and other creative copy.
Acting as the main port of call for colleagues who have questions about the publishing schedule and fielding external inquiries.
Organizing meetings and taking minutes in departmental meetings.
Keeping our Biblio database and book metadata up to date.
Preparing texts for handover to the production team.
Essential experience, abilities, and knowledge you’ll need to succeed:
Passionate about speculative fiction with a keen interest in current market trends.
Effective writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
Relationship-building skills to effectively collaborate with team members and external partners.
A willingness to learn new skills and software.
Ability to work calmly under pressure.
Desirable skills we’d love you to have:
Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel, and Google Docs and Sheets.

This is a full-time, permanent position and will be based in our offices in Farringdon, London, with some flexibility to work from home each week.
