Job Title: Electronic Engineer Phlux is an award-winning semiconductor start-up based in Sheffield, UK. We have commercialised a breakthrough infrared sensor technology poised to revolutionise advanced driver safety features using LIDAR, ultra-fast low-latency communication networks, and 3D imaging solutions that uncover the invisible. With over £5M of investment raised to date, Phlux is a revenue-generating company with a team of 18 skilled professionals spanning operations, sales and marketing, engineering, semiconductor devices, and finance. We are now scaling rapidly and seeking passionate individuals to join our innovative team. The Role: Phlux has developed a new class of infrared semiconductor chip that is now in production. The successful applicant will join our engineering team as we ramp production of our first product whilst developing our second product range designed for LIDAR, greenhouse gas sensing, defence and security systems. The second product integrates our infrared detector chip with a low noise amplifier and control electronics into a detector module. This is an opportunity to work on high performance products for many leading ‘brand name’ Tier 1 customers. In this role, you will join our electronic engineering team and design products specifically for customer applications and a more generic off the shelf product with the candidate having exposure to the full product lifecycle, from concept development to production. While circuit design tasks are involved, the role will have a focus on test, validation, and performance characterisation of analogue electronics. This will involve designing and building new optoelectronic test rigs with help from our optics and electronics experts. The role would be suited to a electronic, validation or test engineer and the applicant should have excellent organisational and communication skills and be comfortable working independently and with engineers, technicians, marketing, sales, and management. Responsibilities: Characterising the performance of new optoelectronics circuits against customer or internal specifications. Design and build new test rigs and set-ups for testing specialised characteristics of optoelectronics devices, enhancing the company's capabilities. Optimising test time and usability. Design and characterisation of extremely low noise circuits, including transimpedance amplifiers, power supplies, filters, thermoelectric coolers, and signal conditioning circuits. Preparing technical reports and presentations for customer and project partner meetings. Work with technical and management teams to develop and upgrade new products on time and within set budgets. As a fast-growing start-up, there will be opportunities for the successful applicant to grow technically and professionally as the company scales. This includes opportunities to develop new technical and professional skills and to make an impact by bringing new disruptive products to market. Qualification Skills and Experience: A bachelor level degree in Electronic Engineering or relevant engineering subject. 3+ years successful post-graduate experience in electronics design and test. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to collaborate across multifunctional teams and stakeholders at all levels. Experience using circuit simulation and PCB layout software such as LT Spice and Altium. Strong competence in practical electronics and mechanical work. Knowledge of Python and/or other programming languages. Eligible to work in the UK. Goals: 3 months: Familiarisation with the team and technology. Proficient in using optoelectronic test setups in our device and electronics labs and interpreting results. 6 months: Re-designed test rigs to improve functionality, automate data collection, and enable the characterisation of prototype receiver modules over a wide temperature range. Lead the optical and electrical characterisation of new prototype detector modules against target specifications. Document test data and present results back to the team. 9 months: Support the team in developing demonstrator platforms and evaluation kits. Team delivered beta prototypes (commercial grade prototype) for customer trials. 12 Months: Support the team to take prototypes into production. Benefits: Competitive salary based on experience. Share options with tax efficient EMI stock options - Own a part of the company. 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays. 5% employer contribution to pension scheme. Relocation package. Exciting and dynamic work environment as part of a growing start-up. Recruiting referral bonus scheme. Flexibility: We work 37.5 hours a week, Monday – Friday. Work hours can be flexible; however, this role will be lab-based, so remote or hybrid working isn’t available for this role. If you are thinking of taking the next step in your career, then we’d like to hear from you.
