Job Introduction

BBC Scotland and Screen Scotland are looking for the next generation of unscripted television directors, based in Scotland. Up to 6 candidates will be given the opportunity to produce and direct their first 30 or 60 minute long documentary for BBC Scotland & BBC iPlayer.

We want BBC Scotland's output to reflect the range of modern, vibrant and diverse audiences that we serve in every corner of Scotland. With this initiative we will focus on delivering content that attracts a broad audience but also will appeal to a younger audience. We seek to tell stories that reflects the audience's experience and which are told in an engaging and authentic way.

We welcome applications from anyone regardless of their age, disability, ethnicity, heritage, sexuality, gender and socio-economic background. We are actively seeking individuals with skills or experience that can help contribute towards ensuring we maximise the diversity of our content: https://www.bbc.co.uk/diversity. Flexible working requests will be considered.

The central focus of this initiative is to support the production community in Scotland in attracting and supporting the best emerging non-scripted directing talent, based in Scotland.

Main Responsibilities

Each successful applicant will be based for the duration of the project at a leading production company in Scotland. This company will have pitched the film and won the commission on which the successful candidate will work. The company will also oversee the development, filming and post production of the film. They will also offer training, guidance and support throughout the initiative. It is likely that some of the successful candidates will work on films for the Our Lives strand which airs on BBC One network and BBC Scotland - these are half hour films which must be capable of drawing a broad, mainstream audience.

In addition, you will be supported by BBC Commissioners from both BBC Scotland and BBC Network in your development and in the production of your finished programme. At various stages throughout the initiative you will also be expected to take part in masterclasses which will be offered by a number of leading industry experts and practitioners.

Please note that the initiative is funded for the duration of the project and will not result in a staff role at the BBC. The length of the contract will be dependent on the length of the production which could be anything from three to six months.

Are you the right candidate?

Before applying, please make sure you meet one of the qualifying criteria:

Candidates must not have previously been credited as Director or Producer/Director on a BBC Scotland or Network programme for any of the major channels of 28 minutes duration or longer. (This is excluding BBC Alba. Emerging Directors who are keen to make their first crossover into English language factual programming will be considered.) Candidates who have produced, casting produced or edit produced programmes for BBC Scotland or Network channels but have not worked as a combined Producer/Director will be considered. Candidates must be based in Scotland. Candidates who have directed and released their own short documentary films for major competition or film festivals will be considered. Candidates who have a track record in creating branded content for online or TV commercials for commissioned fees will be considered. Candidates who create social/influencer content of a unscripted/factual/documentary nature - that can demonstrate a high and consistent number of followers - will be considered

All Applicants must provide a CV that demonstrates their experience in television content production or similar field e.g. corporate film-making, short-filmmaking with theatrical release, online video content which has attracted significant audiences, etc.

You must be able to self-shoot* to broadcast standard and have demonstrable evidence that you have experience of editing content. Ideally, you will have Assistant Producer or DV Director credits; alternatively, if your content production experience comes from a non-television discipline we will expect you to provide evidence of broad editorial, craft and problem solving skills relevant to television at an intermediate level. We expect all applicants to have an awareness and understanding of the BBC's Editorial Guidelines

*please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments
