The role of the Employee Relations Manager for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is to enhance the provision of high-quality employee relations services, offer specialised guidance to managers, and ensure adherence to employment laws and trust policies.

Main duties of the job This position involves advising on a diverse array of complex employment matters and supporting the trusts in their strategic and operational goals while aligning with national and medical terms and conditions. The postholder is essential in cultivating a fair and educational environment, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and ensuring reliable office coverage and efficient service delivery across both Trusts in support of the Single Corporate Service objectives.

As the Employee Relations Manager, you will act as a primary authority in Employee Relations, overseeing intricate employee relations cases and advising managers on best practices, as well as providing support to team members during investigations.

Job responsibilities Your responsibilities also include representing HR in Trust hearings and appeals, creating a resolution-oriented atmosphere that promotes staff involvement and empowerment. You will design and implement training initiatives for both managers and employees, track employee relations performance metrics, and assist in the daily operations of the Employee Relations team. Additionally, you will counsel line managers on various HR topics, including disciplinary procedures, grievance handling, performance management, attendance concerns, and conflict resolution.

A key aspect of your role will be to enhance managerial skills, equipping them to tackle personnel issues effectively. As a recognised authority in Employee Relations, you will create training modules for both managers and People and Organisational Development staff, bolstering the team's skills and competencies. Your emphasis will be on developing efficient, value-driven employee relations processes that comply with best practices and legal requirements. In collaboration with fellow Employee Relations Managers, you will share responsibility for enhancing employee relations services, conducting training programmes, updating intranet resources, and presenting regular Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reports to leadership.

Person Specification Qualifications

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Professional Qualification (Post graduate level 7) or equivalent

Evidence of continuing personal and professional development

Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)

Experience

Previous experience of managing complex employee relations casework, including sickness absence and health and wellbeing.

Able to demonstrate the delivery of initiatives that have reduced sickness absence

Designing and/or improving process and systems

Supervising/managing staff

Positively engaging with trade unions and staff

In depth knowledge and experience of employment legislation to include TUPE Transfers, understanding of Discrimination (constructive dismissal, Discrimination)

Experience of a large, highly complex organisation / NHS

Providing high quality case supervision

Additional criteria

Good understanding of best practice in improving attendance and creating healthy work environments

Evidence of expertise, interest and continuing professional development in sickness management and/or supporting staff with disabilities

Strong track record and commitment to equality and inclusion with expert knowledge of disability

Demonstrable experience of interpreting and applying terms and conditions of an organisation

Digital literacy with ability to effectively use technology to work efficiently and deliver objectives

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a particular emphasis on report writing for the board and employment tribunals

Up-to-date knowledge on employment legislation

Understanding of NHS medical and AfC Terms and Conditions

Understanding of health and safety standards; NICE guidance and the latest best practice in improving attendance at work

Able to demonstrate innovation and new approaches in improving attendance

Trained in Job Evaluation
