Job Purpose
You will be responsible for leading a centre of excellence, providing expert advice on environmental regulation for Water Quality discharges. You will lead a team with the responsibility for negotiating, obtaining, administering and the management of environmental permits to allow the business to operate legitimately.
This role requires you to manage the strategic relationships with our regulators as well as shaping the regulatory landscape through involvement with national level industry groups. You will provide technical advice to our capital delivery teams to ensure solutions proposed meet the regulatory requirements of a changing regulatory landscape.
Job Accountabilities
Responsible for negotiation, obtaining, administering and management of environmental permits to allow the business to operate legitimately.
Budget management
Responsible for specific strategic external relationships including with our regulator
To assist in the development and tracking of regulatory commitments and performance metrics.
Responsible for understanding and influencing the regulatory landscape to support our business strategy development.
To understand and communicate the commercial implications of changing environmental obligations internally and influence the outcomes externally.
Setting regional policies and regulatory guidance notes to enable the implementation of new legislation and regulation into our business.
Assessing the impact of legislative changes and environmental policies
Influence strategy development to ensure regulatory requirements are embedded.
Represent United Utilities at a National level to work on, and lead, environmental regulatory strategies.
Provide expert input and review of regulatory reporting processes to ensure provision of reliable accurate and complete information to regulators.
Develop and maintain systems which hold regulatory information and track our programme and delivery of environmental permit changes.
Knowledge and Skills
A degree or post graduate qualification in a relevant discipline or have at least five years relevant experience. Membership of a relevant professional body is desirable (MCIWEM or IAM)
Demonstrate strategic thinking at all levels
Experience and an in-depth knowledge of the relevant water quality regulation and the water industry
Excellent analytical reasoning, negotiating and influencing skills and budget management experience
Ability to maintain your knowledge and skills to develop yourself within the role and to ensure recency as a subject matter expert on water discharge regulation
Thorough understanding of wastewater network and process design, construction, operation and serviceability
Well developed interpersonal and communications skills with experience of planning and delivering effective communications strategies and managing client relationships
