Location: Hybrid Contracted to our Wilmslow, London, Edinburgh, Cardiff or Belfast office; however, we offer flexible home and office-based working opportunities. There will be regular times when you will be expected to attend the office to collaborate with colleagues or travel due to business need. Job summary The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the independent regulator of information rights – empowering people through information. In a data-driven world, we protect and safeguard the public by providing advice and enforcing the law, taking action where warranted. This includes providing advice, guidance, and support to organisations to enable compliance with legal obligations, responsible innovation, and economic growth. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and influential individual to lead our work to shape how data is used in technology and business – from influencing the global development and adoption of AI to shaping the tracking-based advertising models that underpin the internet. As Executive Director Regulatory Risk and Innovation, you will keep the ICO at the cutting edge of market and technological developments, leading work to position the ICO to regulate effectively in the digital landscape. Bringing policy and regulatory leadership alongside commercial and technological acumen, you will oversee expert teams of policy, legal, and technology specialists, providing visible and inspirational people leadership, and will lead our work to support innovators, including award-winning Regulatory Sandbox and Innovation Advice services. As a regular contributor to the Executive Team and attendee at Management Board, you will make a significant contribution to the development and delivery of the ICO’s strategic plans, policies, and initiatives. You will engage at the most senior levels, developing and maintaining productive relationships across government, parliament, regulators, industry, and civil society to deliver results. You will represent the ICO both nationally and internationally, with scrutiny in the media, at select committees, and in the legal system. Person specification Degree or relevant professional qualification or equivalent. A track record of successful policy leadership with evidence of strategic planning and delivery of high-quality outcomes. Significant track record of delivering innovation which supports growth of the digital economy. Experience of leading significant, organisation-wide change projects from concept to sign off. Substantial experience in a high-level representational and negotiating role. Experience of writing business cases relating to major initiatives. Expertise, or demonstrable ability to develop expertise, regarding information rights legislation. Sound policy judgement, with the ability to objectively marshal evidence, opinion, strategy, and delivery considerations in order to reach decisions. Understanding of the principles of good regulation and their practical application. A good track record in managing teams and delivering organisational change to get results. Up-to-date knowledge of modern business and corporate planning methodologies, government standards, and best practice. Knowledge of the regulatory environment, including the democratic, political, and organisational framework. Knowledge of corporate governance and expectations in the public sector. Personal stature to be a credible public face for the organisation across industry on technology governance.
