As an Expert Practitioner in Specimen Dissection you will be responsible for supervising and performing a wide range of complex scientific procedures. This will require the postholder to analyse, assess and sample specimens independently in order to contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and the investigation of other pathological processes. For those applicants who do not hold the IBMS Dipolma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection, you will be supported while youundertake the IBMS portfolio in expert dissection. Therefore, the successful candidate will obtain a Band 7 on completion of their training and diploma. Main duties of the job You will be responsible for supporting the day to day operation of histological dissection and will have in depth scientific knowledge of that discipline. You will work closely with our experienced and growing histopathology consultant team. You will liaise with thebiomedical scientists in the laboratory to ensure a timely workflow through the dissection area. You will collaborate with Integrated Pathology Solutions andoversee the work carried out by a team of technical staff to provide an efficient and effective dissection service. You will be expected to support with the development of Biomedical Scientific staff to undertake specimen dissection competently to meet the needs of the service requirements and turnaround times. You will be involved with the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures within your designated area. You will also undertake analytical, technical, and administrative troubleshooting to ensure reliable service delivery. You will provide expert advice and opinion to colleagues both inside and outside the department as and when necessary, participate in research when requested. Person Specification Experience Essential Significant experience post registration experience in the NHS working in histology at Band 6 level Proven experience of undertaking audits Ability to develop and write policies and procedures Standard Operating Procedures Evidence of a good understanding of the use and interpretation of quality control Desirable Experience of teaching and supervision of junior and trainee grades Experience of working with wide ranging stakeholders Experience of service development Skills Essential Able to communicate in English clearly and precisely both verbally and in writing with a wide range of staff / managers / clinicians and external stakeholders Ability to assess and sample appropriate areas of specimens for further analysis Able to explain and implement new policies and procedures Ability to work with minimum supervision and to co-ordinate their own activities The ability to deal with complex issues and problem solve in a methodical and logical approach Knowledge Essential Knowledge and understanding to perform expert histological dissection following Royal College of Pathologists guidelines A good working knowledge of health and safety principles applicable to working within Histopathology Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff Qualifications Essential IBMS Dipolma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection or equivalent is acceptable* *Evidence of a dipolma is essential for a Band 7. A trainee could be considered but the successful candidate will only obtain a Band 7 on completion of their training and diploma. A trainee would be paid in accordance with Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change terms and conditions (a % of the top of a band 7 pay scale dependent on the length of the training)* A degree acceptable to HCPC, (or Final Examination of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Higher National Certificate, or equivalent (in appropriate subject)) HCPC registration Evidence of continuous professional development
