Better Dairy is building the future of food by producing molecularly identical dairy proteins without using any animals.

This allows us to provide consumers with delicious, nutritious and versatile dairy products without harmful effects to the planet and animals. By utilizing a series of technologies, including precision fermentation, we are rebuilding dairy from the ground up. The Role We are looking for a Scientist to join our Bioprocessing team. This is a critical role with an emphasis on material generation and quality management. We would love to meet candidates from a variety of backgrounds who have a passion for science and food.

This role is based in our Hackney Wick office full time, though some remote working is possible.

The successful candidate will be comfortable pitching in at every level and enjoys a high accountability/high autonomy environment.

Responsibilities

Successfully executing precision fermentation runs using equipment such as shake flasks and bioreactors (up to 30L). Writing, updating and maintaining data reports, batch records and SOPs on digital filing systems and hard copy lab-notebooks. Strong collaboration with downstream processing scientists in the bioprocessing team, and adjacent teams such as strain engineering and analytics. Troubleshooting challenges or unexpected outcomes during experiments and other processes. Maintaining cleanliness and organisation in and out of the lab. Performing regular equipment maintenance and cleaning to ensure production capacity and quality. Contributing to a high performance team culture.

Required Experience Broad knowledge of microbiology and aseptic technique. Recent practical experience in fermentation of yeast strains for protein production. Experience operating shake flasks, and bioreactors of approximately 1-30L. Independence in media preparation, generating and maintaining cell banks and carrying out process QC. Independence in methods for protein analysis, such as protein gels and Western blots. The ability to work independently and in a dynamic team environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, detail-oriented, proactive and flexible.

Desirable Experience Experience of HPLC. Experience of working with filamentous fungi.
