Finance Director | Specialist International Engineering Firm | Hertfordshire

Our client, a specialist international engineering firm with a turnover of approximately £20 million and a strong balance sheet, is seeking a skilled Finance Director to lead their finance function. Based in Hertfordshire, this is a strategic role reporting directly to the Managing Director and includes a seat on the board, giving you a direct influence on the future direction of this well-established, high-performing business with a global reach.

The Role:

As the Finance Director, you will be pivotal in shaping the financial strategy and supporting the growth of the firm. Leading a talented finance team, including a Financial Controller and Management Accountant as your #1 and #2, your responsibilities will include:

  • Financial Strategy Development: Implement and manage financial strategies that align with the firm’s growth objectives, leveraging the company’s strong balance sheet.
  • Financial Integrity and Compliance: Maintain rigorous controls and ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and industry standards.
  • Board and Leadership Collaboration: As a board member, work closely with the MD and senior leaders, providing insights that guide business strategy and decision-making.
  • Reporting and Analysis Leadership: Ensure the timely delivery of accurate financial reports, offering insightful data to support both operational and strategic planning.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Mentor the Financial Controller and Management Accountant, fostering growth and optimizing the finance function.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out:

This position offers the chance to join a close-knit team within a high-retention environment—many colleagues have over 10 years of tenure, highlighting the firm’s supportive culture and commitment to long-term employee development. Here, you will find stability, innovation, and the chance to make a meaningful impact in a specialist engineering firm with a strong track record of growth and excellence.

Skills and Experience:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Qualifications: ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualification (or equivalent), with a strong grounding in financial and regulatory compliance.
  • Relevant Industry Experience: Significant experience in a finance leadership role within a manufacturing or R&D-heavy organization—ideally in sectors such as medical devices, electronic engineering, defence, optical or mechanical engineering, automotive or related fields.
  • Strategic Financial Leadership: Proven ability to develop and implement financial strategies that drive business performance and growth.
  • Collaborative Approach: Ability to work effectively with executive leadership and influence key decisions as a trusted strategic partner.
  • Operational Skills: Hands-on experience in financial reporting, controls, and compliance, coupled with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

About You:

We’re looking for a commercially minded Finance Director with the strategic acumen and operational expertise to lead in a globally-oriented engineering firm. If you’re a qualified finance leader with a background in R&D and manufacturing environments and a desire to influence from the board level, this could be a career-defining role.

Join a company known for its quality, commitment to innovation, and exceptional employee retention, where you’ll play a key role in shaping the future of a respected, growth-oriented engineering firm.
