The mission of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service. Virginia Sea Grant (VASG) is a seven-university coalition, headquartered at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences, composed of the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, George Mason, Old Dominion, and Virginia Commonwealth Universities. VASG’s mission is to enhance the ecological, economic, and social resilience and sustainability of coastal and ocean communities and the ecosystem services they depend upon through university-based research, extension, education, and communication that provide science-based information to decision makers. Position Summary

The Financial Officer provides advanced-level data analytics, evaluation, and management of VASG’s diverse financial portfolio, including an in-depth understanding, utilization and management of budget processes, revenue sources, and expenditures. The Financial Officer works collaboratively with the VASG Director, Associate Director, and program leads to manage the approximately $8-$10 million annual budget comprised of federal, state, and private-sector funding. This position oversees all aspects of VASG’s fiscal operations, supports proposal preparation and budget development, and is responsible for subaward coordination and post-award management, fiscal reporting, forecasting, and staff level-of-effort analysis. Reporting to the Associate Director, VA Sea Grant, the Financial Officer is a member of the VASG’s leadership team and provides guidance and support on fiscal operations, planning, evaluation, and initiatives. This position also serves as the primary day-to-day contact for VIMS/Batten School Office of Finance, VIMS/Batten School Office of Sponsored Programs, and liaison to the National Sea Grant Fiscal Officers Network. This position is subject to additional hours beyond the typical work day/week to meet the changing business needs. This position requires the ability to maintain professional knowledge on current regulations by attending annual professional development opportunities/training and/or courses, as appropriate. This position is restricted, and continuation of position is based on availability of funding. Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or equivalent combination of education and experience. COMPETENCIES: Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Strong mathematic computation skills with the ability to develop projections of multi-million dollars in revenue from multiple sources. Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and sponsor rules and regulations as they relate to all fund sources (E&G, grants/contracts, private foundations, IDC, etc.). Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-faceted team environment resolving issues effectively. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills, with the demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities concurrently with competing deadlines. EXPERIENCE: Several years of progressively responsible financial and budget management (typically 5+ years). Experience in accounting, finance, budget, and/or grant management. Experience using automated financial or accounting systems. Intermediate to advanced level proficiency with Excel. Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field with relevant experience. COMPETENCIES: Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia state university policies. Demonstrated knowledge of large enterprise resource planning system such as Workday and/or Banner. EXPERIENCE: Experience with pre- and post-award management. Experience with non-sponsored and private funds. Significant and progressively responsible financial and budget management experience in a higher education institution. Experience working with Banner, Workday or similar ERP system. Remote Work Eligibility

Hybrid (works remotely at least 1 day per week but not full-time). Advertised Pay Range

Up to $78,000/year. All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment. Benefits Summary Statement
