Fixed Term Consultant in Palliative Care

The successful post holder will be employed by United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (ULTH) but will be line managed and supported via St Barnabas Hospice. A collaboration agreement exists between the two organisations and honorary contracts support the medical staff to deliver clinical care for both providers.

With the support and direction of the executive and clinical leads, the successful applicant will ensure that we continue to provide quality care to patients and their families in Lincolnshire.

This post is based in the acute trust and includes consultant support and leadership in the hospital specialist palliative care multidisciplinary team, direct patient visits, and supporting advice to other healthcare professionals.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would join 4 other consultants working across the county. St Barnabas Hospice also employs 3 specialty doctors, a specialty trainee (StR) and two GP VTS trainees.

The on-call commitment is currently a 1 in 7 but on successful recruitment would be a 1 in 8. This is a first on call to the 11 bed inpatient hospice in Lincoln and includes supporting a 24/7 telephone advice line to healthcare professionals across Lincolnshire.

We would be happy to consider candidates wanting to work part-time (minimum 8 PAs) or job share.

Applicants should be fully registered with the UK General Medical Council or be within 6 months of completion of CCT at the time of interview.

Pilgrim Hospital is a modern 547 bedded District General Hospital pleasantly situated in Boston with good transport links. It provides a full range of hospital services to a catchment population of approximately 200,000, which increases to 250,000 during the summer due to the holiday influx to Skegness and related resorts. A full range of clinical specialties and laboratory facilities of the highest standard are provided.

St Barnabas Hospice has an outstanding Care Quality Commission rating and via strategic objectives and as a system partner, is working to define and develop quality improvements in palliative and end of life care across the county. Opportunities to develop skills and be engaged in education, training, clinical leadership and research will be supported.

The post combines clinical leadership and the direct delivery of care in an acute trust (as part of a hospital specialist care team), with quality improvement regards a front door approach to SPC support and a lead role in SPC education.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential On GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine or within 6 months of CCT Possession of appropriate higher postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MRCP, MRCGP) Desirable Other higher professional qualifications (e.g. Masters, Doctorate) Specialist knowledge Essential Experience in all aspects of palliative medicine in a wide range of settings Experience of medical education Experience in teaching health professionals including medical personnel at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
